Chloë Grace Moretz: ‘Cruel’ viral ‘Family Guy’ meme turned me into a recluse

Chloë Grace Moretz opened up about suffering from body dysmorphic disorder after a “horrific” “Family Guy” meme of herself went viral, admitting she became a “recluse.”

The “Kick-Ass” star revealed in an interview with Hunger magazine that the “joke” often posted on Twitter forced her to retract from the public eye.

“There was one meme that really affected me, of me walking into a hotel with a pizza box in my hand,” the 25-year-old said.

Moretz explained that “this photo got manipulated into a character from ‘Family Guy’ with the long legs and the short torso, and it was one of the most widespread memes at the time.”

The photograph was from 2016 and captured the actress carrying two pizza boxes while sporting an outfit consisting of a top, heels and shorts. The paparazzi snapshot was then edited into looking like her midsection was shortened and her legs were overly long. The shot was reminiscent of the “Family Guy” character Legs Go All the Way Up Griffin, so the cartoon from the show and Moretz’s pap shot were mockingly put side-by-side. Thus, a meme was born.

This snap of Moretz led to the Family Guy meme.

“Everyone was making fun of my body and I brought it up with someone and they were like, ‘Oh, shut the f – – k up, it’s funny,’ ” the “Carrie” actress noted.

But Moretz said while she “actually never really talked about this,” she suffered from body dysmorphia.

“I just remember sitting there and thinking, ‘My body is being used as a joke and it’s something that I can’t change about who I am, and it is being posted all over Instagram,’ ” she said.

Family Guy - Legs Go All The Way Up Griffin is Peter Griffin's great-aunt. Her legs indeed go all the way up. In Amish Guy, Peter pledges to lose weight in order to ride a roller coaster in Columbus, OH. He insists that when he gets done he'll look as good as his great-aunt. However, when his great-aunt shows off her legs in a cutaway gag, a passer-by reacts in horror, calling her a monster.

basically became a recluse,” she said, adding that she just went out to do film projects. “To this day, when I see that meme, it’s something very hard for me to overcome.”

The Georgia native also said being left alone felt “great” because she was given the opportunity to “get away from the photographers, and I was able to be myself.”

“[I was able to] have so many experiences that people didn’t photograph,” she said. “But at the same time, it made me severely anxious when I was photographed. My heart rate would rise and I would hyperventilate.”

Moretz added how the offensive photo made her “kind of sad,” as it made her feel uncomfortable going out in public.

“It took a layer of something that I used to enjoy, which was getting dressed up and going to a carpet and taking a photo, and made me super self-conscious,” she said.

The “Brain on Fire” star also said she had lots of therapy stemming from issues related to being in the spotlight.

“I think that body dysmorphia — which we all deal with in this world — is extrapolated by the issues of social media. It’s a headf – – k,” she said.

Moretz also revealed how the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown “aided” in the experience of staying out of the spotlight.

“To say that these past two years have been transformative is an understatement, to say the least,” Moretz said. “I’m a very different girl than I was. I feel like a woman now.”

Yeah curse that pristine body figure and those amazing long legs. The struggle is real.

That's a shame. She seems like one of the few Hollywood celebs who has a down to earth and good sense of humour.

That said Chloe, in the public eye someone will rip on you for something. The only way to beat it is to take part in the joke.

Like when people called Ryan Seacrest gay, he joined in on the joke and now nobody calls him gay anymore. That little pole smoker is right! (Family guy reference there)

It'd be in poor taste to post them, but I find the other Chloe Moretz memes much funnier than the family guy one. It's genetics, no sense in getting caught up on something you can't do anything about. Does that Adam Driver dude ever talk about his feelings being hurt by his "W I D E B O I" memes?

I read this last week and had no idea family guy was making fun of her. The internet of 2016 is way different than it is today. If this was done now I bet way more people would have noticed.

Body dismorphia has got to be bad. I think her legs are slammin in that photo of her carrying pizza and never would have imagined making fun of her for that.

I'm a leg kind of guy and those are some extremely nice legs on Chloe. The problem is that she has a pure babyface and she's been working in the industry since childhood. So as your eyes are appreciating those sexy legs and you reach the face, you'll start to feel like a paedophile.

I don’t know, is this stupid white woman, or some sort of privilege, etc.? How about just not participating in social media? How fucking hard can it be???

My first reaction is " Fuck social media" but I guess you can't do that when you're a public figure with maybe a PR rep and all that entourage crap.

Still, poor you sad victim come on.

Use some of the money in your Scrooge McDuck vault of gold coins and pay for therapy if you're that scarred by it.

"Recluse". GTFOH.

Don't you mean three, unless you are into amputees.
Ya see, the thing about legs is they come in pairs so if I say two legs that implies: 2 sets of 2 (2 squared = 4 legs total) quadrupedal. And, I ain’t into quadrupeds …yet.

She seems cool and apparently she's quite into games. Anyway yeah if you let the internet know that something gets under your skin then they will forever use that against you to piss you off. Go along with it and they will not get a kick out of it because they'll see it's not bothering you.

that said i'm not saying she should suck it up and deal with it. if she struggles with body dysmorphia or any mental health issues then she needs to work through it and seek help. hopefully she has and now she feels able to confront it.

I know how to help Chloe and I'm officially offering my services as a trained therapist and cool dude who will help her see herself in a better light.

I fear if she doesn't get it sorted now, that she's got a future similar to Britney Spears.

Christ a lotta fucking sympathy in here, cut the girl some slack, women are overly sensitive about their bodies and when you add in being fucking papped and Photoshopped every waking moment you're in public and then made fun off on a constant basis any wonder the poor girl got mental health issues regardless of how we feel she actually looks, it's how she feels she looks that matter. State of some of the posts in here

I know exactly how she feels. Yesterday when i received my electric bill i almost fainted and started hyperventilating.
What a load of crap. If thats her biggest problem them she has no real problems
cause she's got money she isn't allowed to have problems with her body or mental health? fuck off lol

i hate this shit. oh i'm struggling to pay my bills. these rich celebs don't know nothing about real life! they have it so easy so how dare they complain about anything!

There is a lot of truth to this. I don't really mean to minimize mental health issues as I have my own and come from a family of addiction. Mental health is obviously serious business.

In this case, it seems as tho all her mental health issues come from looking at social media and being famous.. There is an easy solution to that. Stop looking at social media. You make millions of dollars a year. Pay someone to manage all your accounts and tap out of it.

And if you hate the fact that you're photoshopped in public, there's an easy solution to that too. Change your lifestyle and stay out of the public eye. You've made more money than most people could ever dream of. If your life is so hard because of it you have options available to you the vast majority of people don't because of your wealth. Take advantage of those options and change what you dislike about your life. If you choose to continue to stay in the public eye despite the fact that you know you can't cope with many of the things that are causing you mental strife then it's really in you at that point and I don't have as much sympathy for you as I would otherwise.

People are assholes. It's unfortunate people are doing these things. They shouldn't. But if you choose to be a celebrity and live that lifestyle then be prepared to deal with it. It comes with the territory. In fairness to her she was asked the question Andis dealing with it.

I always disliked that TV show.

Their Jokes are out of context.... Another TV show that i hate is FRIENDS...

I don't mind its teasing. This actress is seen to be a good person and cute.

I support her
