Men's Hair |OT|

Well, to further clarify it's black wavy hair that kind of grows out of my head in every direction. The back curls up first and almost sticks straight out from my head. Thought about going to a stylist but really have no idea what my options are and how they'd look on me.

Yeah thats why you can go to a stylist. It its a good one, he/she will know what to do and give you options. Maybe you wont have the right haircut right away, but you can try things out until you feel like it fits with you.

A good haircut can mean the difference to feeling shitty every day and feeling like you own the world every day. Really, it can make all the difference.

I got a wavy mop for hair. I don't have a perfect, chiseled, symmetrical god face to be able to "own it" either.

It sucks, but at least I'm not bald.

you are not your trendy hairstyle.

but seriously, i tried that as well years back, but its hard to pull of good. you got to have the right thickness of hair for it.
The way i do it is not shampooing. Having your natural oils lets you shape it the way you want. Also "got 2 b" gel is needed for my thick hair.

Great OP.

I tend to go for short back and sides and finger cut short on top, I wear it sort of like this:

Km2qR.jpg

(most recent example of when I had seen my hairstyle on film), not a faux hawk per se but pushed forward and up at the front.

For fellow non US people looking for styling (Amercian Crew is available here but it's like double the price) I reccomend:

Fish, they are London based and do a huge range, Boots stock it in the UK for about £6. Massive range from shiny soft hold to hard hold matte.

This is what I'm wearing these days

I have serious issues of thinning hair from my crown. So I pretty much have to use wax to give them some volume. Sometimes I think of cutting them short but I love having medium to long hair and I just can't go back to short hair (for now atleast) I think I'll have them cut from the sides to make my ears visible atleast.

I have a question, how would I describe this cut to a hairdresser?

jake-gyllenhaal-cover.jpg

It may seem like a simple cut and it's the sort of thing I ask for everytime I go, but they never cut my sides short enough and it bugs the hell out of me, I pay £30 so it's a decent place and they're capable, I have it scissor cut, should I be having my sides/back shaved (trying to work out if that's what jake has had done in that pic)

I don't think I've been satisfied with a haircut in years.

3 back and sides taken pretty high, short choppy / textured finger cut on top and styled right, using matte product.

Thanks, just a 3? They always seem hesitant for some reason to go short, which always worried me, but if it goes wrong I can always wear a hat or shave it all off ...

How do you know what hair style would work well with your face?

You just have to own that wavy hair

The moment you try do go against the style of your hair, is the moment you're going to fail. Of course with a buzzcut you cant go wrong, but I mean, if you want to grow it out, don't try to straighten it.

That much be a pain to get right every morning.

3 is perfect imho, shaved short enough that you don't need product anywhere but the top, but not so short you can see your scalp.

Barbers shouldn't be afraid of a 3, places I go are used to giving guys a 2 all over...

I'll try a 3 then, I go to a salon and it's about 90% women, 10% men clientele, probably why they're afraid to go so short! They are very good in there though. The barbers around here don't have a good rep, usually chavvy women who are absoloutely crap at cutting hair.

Pretty easy to achieve if you're blonde, you still have to get a haircut for it.

Other hypes, I don't know, I'm not the expert. I just know the faux hawk was VERY popular a few years ago, had one myself actually, but it got tired quick. Maybe someone else has the latest on the popular haircuts right now.

I'm just a big believer in whatever makes you feel good, is the best. Be it faux hawk, be it long hair, whatever. If you feel good then it'll show.

His hairstyle is nice but I can't achieve something like that with my hair. :/

Where are you? I would guess UK from the word chavvy?

I shave my head slick every morning.

Gillette moisturizing shaving cream and either a Mach 3 or Gillette Fusion razor tend to get the closest shaves where you have less of a shadow residual on your head. Finish after the shower with a light SPF lotion and you've got a slick good lookin head.

No sense having a men's hair topic if you're not going to include the completely viable bald bad ass look.

I can't justify paying a legit hair dresser to do my hair.

I usually go to a family friend or super cuts or some shit. As you might imagine, its very inconsistent.

Best hair I felt I had was last year when I went to the Super Cuts in Boston. Dude cut my hair using only scissors when previous people did it with scissors and the machine.

So I tried to repeat it in the Super cuts here in CT. Now I hate my hair, lady cut off too much bangs on one side of my head so it looks like I have a widows peak sometimes.

I hope you have very wavy, sun highlighted hair then ;)

Seriously though, that guy has spent almost every day of his life in the sun and hair like that can't be re-created easily with highlighting / colour.

My hair is thin but "dense", and I have a crazy receding hairline. Literally, it looks like I'm balding but I've had this hairline since high school, so I like to think I'm not
:(
If I use any sort of "part", it means I have a big patch o' forehead showing.

What the hell can I do about this?

Be careful! Not everyone can pull off this style. If your hair is straight and the type that'd stick straight up like a broom when it's that short, you'd look like a hedgehog instead. My hair is like that and I HATE it. I can't cut it too short because I'd look ridiculous. But if it's long, it's also hard to style. ;_;

I'm so stressed out everytime I have to go to hairdresser to cut my hair because there'd be period of a few days to a week where I'd feel like I look like shit. I think it's usually better if I cut my own hair but I can't cut the back hair, especially the upper half of the back area.

I do want to try the tapered nape though. I love it on most guys that I know. But knowing my luck, it'd look shit on me.

No good barbers?, that sucks and it rare for the UK, usually at least one good one somewhere.

Well I've tried most in my local vicinity (and I've moved around a fair bit) I think if they don't get it perfect this time I'll seek out a well rated barber further afield.

Don't try to describe it.

Just print out that photo and take it in with you.

0_o why didn't I think of that, I'll just stick it on my phone, thanks!!

Thankfully my hair is fine being cut like that, most of the time on top it looks exactly like Jakes in the pic, it's just the sides that are a nuisence. Sucks you can't have that cut though, does styling product not work for your hair?

My hair is poker straight, grows "out" rather than flat, I have learnt that if you find the right product you can pull off most short styles.

Styling product only works on my hair if it's up to certain length. If it's too short, I'd look like a wet hedgehog. Granted, it's improvement over the hay broom look that I'd get without it. But usually for good result I always have to tell the hairdresser to just trim the top a bit. If it's not enough, I can just chop it a bit more myself. I just need the hair dresser to cut my side and back.

I'd kill though to have a hair that looks good, neat and tidy without hair product. I often wonder if going to a $60 professional hair dresser would give me a better style but I am not sure if it'd work and I don't like taking risk and having to pay so much just for hair.

I think the only answer to that one is to spend a lot of time and money finding out what shampoo, conditioner and drying (towel, blow etc...) works for your hair, very few people I know can pull it off but there are some and they all use pretty expensive / specialised shampoo and conditioners, even sea salt sprays, heat protection sprays and the like.

If you have damaged hair then product is sort of needed.

I wouldn't say I get bothered about it, but I've never really had the balls to try anything more adventurous than just getting it buzzed down all over.

This is its natural state:
