Shadowrun Returns |OT| Never, ever cut a deal with a dragon.

Is it worth buying this now or holding off to see what others create first? I can see myself playing through, finishing quickly and then losing interest. Can't help but feel it might be better to wait until theres some interesting campaigns being developed.
You might still spend 8-12 hours going through the story. If you liked the story/writing/characters you might enjoy it. I guess it depends whether you want to power through 15 hours at a time with DLC vs 10 hours or whatnot for a main campaign. And of course whether you want to wait for a sale.

Final mission was indeed a PAIN, but no game overs.

Great game. Gameplay had its issues, but solid for the most part. Story and writing was A++. Top shelf.

See you at Saeder-Krupp.

So am I wrong In saying most shadowrun fans wanted a top down old school rpg and nobody asked for a turn based tactics style game? Personally this isn't what I wanted, I'm pretty sure it's not what was promised and my interest level dropped to sub zero. Not saying its wrong to enjoy what they made, just that its not really what fans have clamoured for for 20 years. Great soundtrack though.

Couldn't possibly disagree more.

Considering what we've had before this, I think you'd be wrong. This is a fantastic Shadowrun RPG.

Also, I have the Anthology(it's great so far), but I have no idea if they mean to distribute it through other means.

I backed at $30.

so are all the future campaigns going to be different lead characters you create? just started, the world feels very static, no one moves around, could of swore in the SNES one people were at least walking..making the cities more alive..this feels like its telling me everything and holding my hand.

You're 100% wrong. This is exactly what the Kickstarter promised, and it's what many SR fans wanted, including me and most of GAF. (Crappy save system aside.)

The last update says they are working on a solution for that, too.

Also, Berlin is slated for January. They hope to make it more open-ended, include more fleshed out Runners, and with a campaign at least the size of Dead Man's Switch.

Ugh, just lost significant progress because of the save system. If I wouldn't love everything else about the game so much I really wouldn't bother.

And hopefully
no bugs

(end game spoilers)

Yeah I guess I personally have been hoping for a more exploration based shadowrun rpg all these years and this sounds more like an xcom or fire emblem. I just find it hard to believe that fans of a pen and paper rpg series like this have been pining for a turn based tactical game and not something more traditional. Game still looks good, just not what I was hoping for.

Nothing like booting up the game on Saturday morning, ready to reach the climax and conclusion and see that your save game has been deleted after an update. Fabulous! Steam Cloud has nothing for some reason. 10 hours down the drain. 2013 and this shit still happens?

This is especially sad since GFWL was known for stuff like save files getting corrupted in the Arkham games, but as far as I know Steam cloud is USUALLY pretty good about not losing your files. At the worst, it might say your files are out of sync, and you might have to pick which to keep.

However, I think there have been isolated reports of Shadowrun Returns save files being gone like you describe, basically since release, and it's unfortunate. I imagine it might give people negative impressions of Steam cloud too, but I guess it's not really an advertised feature of the game. I should try to backup my local Steam cloud files just in case I get unlucky.

I'm backing up my saves just in case shit like what you guys are talking about happens.

This game is all I play right now. Even SMT IV is put to the side until I'm done with it.

What kind of "top down old school rpg" combat system are you thinking of that isn't turn-based? Fallout had basically the same system as SRR, minus the cover. Infinity Engine was realtime only in theory; it was unplayable unless you paused every turn.

Not saying the combat in SRR is great. It's something to slog through on the way to the conversations.

The anthology provides great backstory on Cherry Bomb, Baron Samedi, and even the final boss. Major spoilers, but great stuff. Even McKlusky is made somewhat sympathetic.

would love anice thread or website with reviews...sadly i cant afford to check through them all myself..maybe we should start a review thread or something?

I've been THIS close to creating a Shadowrun Mod and Modding thread, but I didn't know if there was any interest besides me.

Some of the ones I've played and liked:

Jacked Up
A Lost Lamb

Others I've heard good things about but haven't tried:
From the Shadows, Run
The Deep One

Life on a Limb gets mentioned a lot, but I've heard it is big and unpolished. I am working on a small mod of my own right now, but it will be a while before I put it out.

Wait, they were willing to print Snatcher on there? That's perfect on many levels.

I skimmed through the submission process and didn't see any clauses that would prevent me, nor did I receive an email saying it was inappropriate. I'm happy with the result -- it's not the highest quality card, but it's damn cool to me.

I'm still conflicted on whether to get this on Steam. Is the lack of save-anywhere a big problem, or is the checkpoint system ok? I've heard some not so great things about people being forced to start a mission just to activate a save after long sessions of exploring the world.

There's not much to explore in the world, or at least not much to find if you explore. However, if you're a slow player like me, a battle/mission section might take 40-60 minutes before you get to the next autosave point.

If you don't mind playing in chunks that long, it is workable. The writing and atmosphere are still nice.

Of course, if you're REALLY unlucky I suppose you might be hit by the rare bug that completely corrupts your save (if I'm understanding people's accounts correctly). I don't know if backed up saves or copied saves still exist for people who were hit by that bug.

It really is.

It's extremely annoying, but if you like the type of game or setting it's worth it.

I haven't received my physical rewards yet (125$ tier). Has anyone in Europe received them?

No one in that tier has, as far as I know (I'm in it too). They said it was delayed, because the print version of the Anthology was delayed by their printer. They want to ship all the physical rewards at once.

The Community Manager said this today on their forum:

Unfortunately, we are still waiting on the books. We've been told that they'll be put on a truck this week but we'll believe it when we get a tracking number and they land at our warehouse. As soon as we have any real information, we'll be shouting it from the rooftops. Promise.

Tactical systems are much closer to pen and paper games than something like the Genesis adventure game. Combat in pen and paper role playing games basically is tactical combat.

Yes, you are very wrong. No one wanted a old school j-"rpg".

Is a Street Samurai with shotguns/rifles viable or should I stick with only one weapon type?

Street Sammys are the ones who use *all* the weapons. That's their thing. So yes, diversify if you have the Karma.

My main character started out as a decker\shaman, but 222 Karma points later, he's more like a shitty decker and a SMG Shotty specialist street samurai, with high level spirit totems as a last resort.

I'm still conflicted on whether to get this on Steam. Is the lack of save-anywhere a big problem, or is the checkpoint system ok? I've heard some not so great things about people being forced to start a mission just to activate a save after long sessions of exploring the world.

It's a much smaller problem than you think. Autosaves at the beginning and end of chapters only. Encourage you to copy your important saves so they can't get corrupted, which doesn't really happen anymore since the patches.

Some people seem to just be outraged at that tiny lack of control or loss of the option, but it doesn't bother me.

Just beat the game, really enjoyed it. The final level was a bit of a drag though in that it was a kill-a-thon.

How are the post-KS sales of this thing? More specifically, how are they in relation to those who effectively preordered via KS? Is there a market for these kinds of high profile KS games beyond KS itself?

It was on the top of the Steam charts for around two weeks, so I'd say they were good.
