Sony Sacrificed the PlayStation 4 Camera to Beat Microsoft on Price

Fobjectively, their games will look at least a generation ahead of whatever Sony's doing.

No way you mean that seriously.

Kinect will make their games look "at least" a gen ahead of sony?

Since when does an input device make a game look better, let alone one that is as usable as kinect?

It is not VR or something

For better or worse, today's Microsoft is a different beast.

Because in five years time when Microsoft Studios and exclusive third-party studios are pumping out games augmented with Kinect features, utilising tech like face detection, heart-rate monitoring, noise cancellation, night-vision, 6-player mapping, deep skeletal mapping, etc... — objectively, their games will look at least a generation ahead of whatever Sony's doing.

I understand everyone being pleased with a lower cost on the console... But I just don't understand why everyone seems so anti-possibility. We've yet to have a real 'chance' to see what can be done with the likes of kinect or the ps eye and one reason is simply because of the install base. With a 'forced' purchase we're telling developers it's always there to use... We could see some amazing progress and uses when the developers know its not just a 'eh 1 in 8 people MIGHT have it... why bother... throw some voice shit in and call it a day'.

I just don't understand what happened to the mindset of 'what could we do if...' vs 'short term it cost me less money, yay'

You keep believing that, son.

Good for them. It's not like early adopters and latecomers were going to jump the PS4 ship just for Move/Camera no matter how decent-to-good it sold prior.

There are 25+ million kinects out in the wild - that's ~1/3 of 360s install base.
People are still waiting on the killer application for it...

360 sold 75 million while Kinect sold 27 million. That means around 50 million 360 owners did not see enough value in Kinect to even bother with it. Xbox fans for the most part don't want to pay an additional $100 for the console brand they want but that is what MS is asking them to do. So by and large Xbox brand loyal people do not see value in Kinect as a part of their gaming experience. The end.

I'd say this is a good decision. I am buying both consoles but it hasn't even occurred to me that PS4 has a camera, I think of only Xbox. I think the target audience Sony is going after feels the same. Xbox is the game console with a camera is the conception most have, I believe. So if you can ship for 100 dollars cheaper why wouldn't you?

What's the metric for success? Personally, I'd be willing to say:

Analogue Controller for PS1
Rumble pack on N64
N64 memory Pack (a bit iffy, though)

I'm still waiting for a fantasy-adventure type game that uses Sports Champion's melee / archery. If you're listening Sony, I will kill for you to get this made.

There's a game called Medieval Moves, or something like that, which does exactly that.

Which is really the exact same hole Nintendo seems to continually dig themselves into with the Wii series of consoles. By creating a gimmicky controller, they force third party devs to shoehorn in some completely unnecessary game mechanic just for the Wii/U version of the game. I think that's why third party development tends to taper off, because they stop giving a fuck.

It's not just "Nintendo is evil" situation here. All developers are required to support SmartGlass and Vita integration. They aren't required to use the Kinect camera.

Yep! I purchased a Kinect and Dance Central. After the novelty wore off it got put up and gathered dust. Needless to say, I rather not be forced into Kinect again if at all possible

Well done Sony. You made the right choice

Can I have some of what you're smoking, please?

Keep reading the thread as Soul Sacrifice, but selling the camera separately was definitely a good move by Sony. There's no way I'd spend $500 on a game console.

Hopefully Microsoft does the same, cause I really want to play D4.

By that time the PS4 might be in a commanding lead because of its price and it won't matter.

I don't mean look as in graphically, I mean as a whole. The experience will be generally more compelling.

This is fact. The graphics on both consoles are basically comparable, for the most part, right? Kinect is the only differentiator. And because there's one in every box, developers will take bigger risks and contribute more to it than with the original Kinect. This means more immersive games. There's no question that won't happen. I'm honestly quite surprised some people don't forsee this, really. It's totally obvious.

Apologies if this was mentioned, but I disagree that it will take ps3 camera adoption to get good software. Companies will make kinect games, and if it can work with pseye, it will be ported.

Piggybacking off of microsofts work.

I have yet to see or hear of a way to utilize kinect in ways people wnt to play beyond gimmicky games like workout warriors or dance party 14.

People don't want to stomp around their living room to move their mech suit.

It was a good call. For a while the act of loading their hardware with unnecessary, expensive proprietary tech was something of a Sony hallmark. I'm amazed that they've corrected course so quickly after seeming to make all the same mistakes with the Vita.

Hopefully they'll remove the cameras from the Vita, it'd be easier to convince my friends to get one

why put any effort in a port if there is hardly an install base??

I literally would have never, ever, EVER used it, so hey, no skin off my back.
Plus, now my poor ass doesn't have to sacrifice as many meals to buy the damn thing.
So thanks, Sony, from me and my stomach.

Move didn't exactly get to piggyback off Wii much. But perhaps the PS4 cam being out on day 1 will help its chances.

That's what happens when you do a pack-in accessory. There's something like 77 million Xbox 360s out there. And there's what... 20 million Kinects? That's not enough for a developer to commit time to, not for anything significant anyway.

If developers know that Kinect is there for every system they're developing for, they'll take the tech to the bleeding edge, and utilise it for everything it's got.

ok here's one. How about an actual 3d representation of a player in a game??

tennis, table tennis and golf are obvious games were this can be a really great thing.

doing hand signs for games as a mode of communication, without the need of voice.

using motion to establish a path for your troops.

stuff like that could benefit various games and improve aspects of it.

If they have an eye bundle within 6 months for the $399 I think it'll be fine. If not then Sony has another failed rarely supported accessory on their hands and it will hurt them.
Like the lack of people voicechatting on the PS3 compared to Xbox. Most people will videochat on the One, while barely anyone will do it on the PS4 if they dont eventually make this thing mandatory.

Wow - multiple sources... yet no quotes or anything... but didn't expect anything more from IGN.

I don't think Sony ever intended to release it with the eye... so this is just some random dude's justification on why its cheaper than the xbox one. Sony's sole focus is on core gamers at the launch.

I mean if Sony intended to release it with the eye, you would expect them to release it with the move controller as well, which would add even more cost and two control schemes. Sony have never used motion control to control their UI.

Secondly the eye is about $50 more but they reduced the price from $500-$400, doesn't make sense.

I'm glad that whatever the case Sony are not releasing the eye with the console, but this is just really bad reporting.

One thing I don't understand, though... if Sony's undercutting the Xbox One's price by $100, by omitting the PlayStation camera, then how is Microsoft justifying its own price by not including 8GB of GDDR5 memory? That's sure to be a significant chunk of Sony's cost.

That's how I feel about the Oculus Rift. The Kinect has never seemed worth it to me, though. Microsoft hasn't even come close to selling me on it.

Microsoft is clearly betting on Kinect as a major difference maker whereas Sony does not see the PS4 camera the same way. The Kinect tech does look incredible but they still have a long way to go to prove the appeal and justify the extra $100. The lower price is a tremendous advantage for Sony and it will take a lot to overcome that.

Microsoft didnt go with a low cost solution. 8 GB DDR3 with 32MB eSRAM ends up with a similar price as the design that Sony decided to go with I'm guessing.

Sorry if old, but this should be the official content of the ps4 box. And yes, no camera ;)

I wish the game cases were that blue color. What's the thing next to the shitty earbud that looks like nintendos heart rate monitor?

You think GDDR5 is expensive? Try ESRAM.

No doubt sony is also absorbing more of the cost from the outset to keep the price down

It's just the clip for the earbuds. To attach it to your shirt or bathrobe or whatever it is you play while gaming.

No not that the thing that looks like a heart rate monitor.

One second look maybe a clothes clip which is stupid. That whole headset is awful, having to move you hand off the controller and up to your ear to mute is poor design.

You know exactly why. Just a pro sony mindset.

If the situation were reversed the forums would yell that MS doesnt believe in Kinect 2.
