Just Cause 3 |OT| Procedural Chaos

Completed it, unlocked as much as I care to and while I had some fun with it, ultimately would rate it about a 5 and Avalanche now joins the list of devs not to buy games from at launch.

I got a strong impression that it was basically JC2 with a few improved mods long before it came out.
JC2 missions weren't great, just going around doing whatever (or nothing in particular) was usually more fun, despite being able to do that in a lot of games... but the wingsuit videos keep me hooked, big fan of cool movement in games.

Still waiting on a steal price for PC to go wingsuiting.

Found it cheap enough... let's see. Massive filesize though, can't get those SSD load times for it.

I'm not too far from completing but I'm having a similar though as you. Right now the game is hovering at about a 6 for me and if there is a Just Cause 4, I probably won't get it day one. I don't know if it is Avalanche as a whole who joins the list of devs not to get day one games from or if it is more specifically Avalanche-New York.

Do you guys have the problem where it constantly says connection lost from square Enix servers and it tries to connect you again? I get it every 15 Minutes and it stops the game to login again every time. My Internet connection is very stable.

Every once in a while but not nearly as frequently as you are having it. It takes hours for it to happen to me.

It's the only reason I don't wanna keep playing. :/ I'm enjoying this game and don't mind load times but I don't want the game pausing all the time.

Nope. Then again, I'm on PS4 and I haven't noticed any framerate issues, either, so maybe I'm just crazy. I mean, I get slowdown when everything in the world explodes at once, but I almost think of that as a feature. Like playing mega man X back in the day.

Haha, fired this up for the first time in a week and my save data's corrupted - awesome! I had the same problems with Just Cause 2, ended up replaying the first few hours of that game about four fucking times because of corrupt saves. Really disappointed to be struck by a similar problem with the sequel.

OK, I found the issue. The crash mentioned above broke my NVidia driver :O

It wasn't just this game that was affected, the framerate drop was felt across all my games. I reinstalled the NVidia driver and now thing is back to its usual smoothness. But anyway, my hats goes off to Avalanche for managing to create a bug so severe that it affected everything in my library.

Right, time to blow things up again!
My game crashed again, meaning my Nvidia drivers broke again, meaning I had to reinstall my drivers again... I think I'll put this game on hold until a couple more updates have been released.

Does anyone know what happens with those mini-challenge stats (e.g. longest distance headshot etc.) when you're offline? Does everything sync up the next time you go online or are they lost? (PS4)

I think I'm done with the game now. All that's left is five-gearing all challenges... and I'm not doing that.

I had fun with the game, but even the PC version is a bit buggy. I was just lucky it wasn't too buggy on my PC.

I finished the story today. Going to finish the rest of the game this weekend, like other area's challenges etc. Hope we will still get some sort of mp co-op sandbox mode.

No inverted camera just for gamepad or the vehicles is a bit noobish and it hanged when I skipped the intro at the start but other than that I'm enjoying it.

Wingsuiting is as awesome as I hoped, will definitely get those 80 stars to reel in faster while flying too.

I like the interface for missions and the map. Explosions look good. Colours are nice, you get some nice scenes but it's not quite as clear as before but it's alright.

Missions are aiight so far but I'm still early. So far so good anyway, I'm having fun.

Manual saves would be nice though. Especially after reading about corrupt saves.
- just tried a motorcycle and it's pretty shoddy to drive. Small adjustments left/right barely do anything.

I do wish the explosions chained a little easier. You can blow up a huge gas tank and it usually won't affect the other gas tanks lined up next to it. I no longer get as excited when I see a row of large gas tanks.

Seemed weird to me too.

Does anyone know where and how the rankings are compared? Because I'm no. 1 for many things in my group but they're all not my friends or anything and I'm certain I'm not no. 1 in the world.

This has probably been asked before in this thread, maybe ad it to the OT as an FAQ question?

I'm going to really struggle with open world games in the future that don't have wingsuit, parachute and grapple to move around. It actually makes moving around fun. The only other game I have fun running around in is Mario 3D games (especially Galaxy). And for me to compare this with that in my mind is a hell of a compliment. I know it's not an amazing game overall with lots of faults but the movement enjoyment makes it all perfect.

I'm getting Pretty good with the wingsuit as well, lots of 5 gear awards for the challenges I'm doing now.

Damn some of the challenges are hard to 5 gear.

Only got a few vehicles left to collect, one modern, one sports and one utility. Need to do the jumps for the off-road stuff and haven't collected any boats yet because I'm waiting for some crazy powerful choppers to air lift them in.

Anyone wanna ad me to PSN my u/n is Dave_725 or dave725@bigpond.com I'd love some more PSN friends.

Also I really don't understand why they can't get the loading times right I mean surely they don't have to re-load entire areas of the game every time you restart a challenge it's so annoying it shouldn't be that way.

One day I'll come back to the Witcher 3 expansions but that won't be for some time, not until I've got myself two new gpu's (running dual 7970s at the moment) and a g-sync 30" 2560 or larger monitor.

Loading times are significantly reduced with patch 1.02.

Another hard crash to XB1 dashboard, locked up with this loud screeching sound and I had to force the machine off. Was having fun for a minute there :p wish I'd listened to the performance impressions. It really is a hot mess.

The final island is incredibly boring. Its massive but feels very empty compared to the first two. Also, far too many protection missions so far. Annika and Teo are brittle as fuck.

Performance not as good as I initially thought on PC near towns. Dropped to 1080p.

Going to use that no-intro mod too.

Wingsuiting rules.

Ended up unlocking all the rebel unlocks with a mod, even hidden ones (messy tags for that though), which kinda makes the side stuff less rewarding but I wanted fun stuff to mess about with when I wasn't flying around.
Also grabbed the tether and wingsuit unlocks. Don't want to wait till I've put most of the time I'm going to into the game before getting the most out of traversal and the grapple.

Rico looks so graceful wingsuiting

Also, love that big heads float up when they die. Feel like playing in this mode the rest of the game!

https://u.pomf.io/blunhc.webm

I wonder if they were limited by the number of buttons on a controller for things like crouching, sprinting... sure grapple hook and flying is awesome but options are nice, would make the combat funner too. Especially when you have a keyboard. One of the unlocks for wingsuiting is to slow down with Ctrl but you use that for cancelling the grapple hook, which is useful while flying too...so I just toggled it off. It's one of the later unlocks too.

cheating with this game improves it so much i don't even feel guilty about it. locking stuff away behind the gears is still stupid but much more bearable when it feels like you're scraping by every other second. i can't be sure but it feels like the more i play this game the worse the performance gets.

Is there a way to unlock things on the ps4 version?

I just want to unlock the max helicopter which I'm sure will be the bonus for the end of the game (I mean getting all the de-ravello tapes will be at the end of the game considering you have to clear an area entirely to see where they all are which sucks cause I wanna use it now and I probably won't play the game too much after I've cleared everything and only using the chopper on a couple of bases would be sad I want that beast now.

Unlocking some vehicles and stuff often comes from completing base takeovers or collecting enough of a certain collectible. The unlocks take a long time and the best stuff is typically going to be used at the end of the game instead.

This game is really beautiful on ps4. Makes me want to build a PC to experience 4k on a 4k tv.

I rented this game today from red box, just might buy it for the wing suit feature alone.

I was 7th in the world for continuous wing suit travel. No idea where it stands now but I will set aside time to take the throne!!

Am I looking at the leader boards right for wing suit wonder? it says the #1 person is 04:28 minutes(me) but there has to be people that have done it longer, no?

There are. The leaderboards are very odd sometimes.

EDIT: Dammit, I didn't combine these posts like I thought I was.

So, now that I've completed the final mission of the game I feel free to rate this game and give my impressions on it.

Pros:
  • The addition of the wingsuit is really great
  • Non vehicle traversal feels great
  • Infinite C4...this is a HUGE improvement over the old game

Cons:

  • The loading issues, bugs, erformance issues. Now that at least the loading has improved I am a bit happier about this
  • Environments were boring compared to Just Cause 2
  • Empty areas...the third island is massive but feels super empty
  • Weak story...even for the Just Cause series. They seem like they couldn't decide between going for a serious story or embracing the goofiness they did before
  • Some gear is still shit even with upgrades
  • A timer between spawning gear....WHY?! Let me have fun in the sandbox with the tools that I want to.
  • The game encourages you to hack SAMs but you stop hacking if you are hit and could stop you from taking over a SAM when you need it on your side. Getting hit shouldn't stop hacking
  • There are very little good reward for collectibles, stunt jumps, etc
  • Too many missions rely on protection/escorting (especially considering all ally items/teammates seem to be very weak)
  • The final mission is boring
and the anti-vehicle FOW weapon did not work on it
  • Avalanche put in easter eggs and extras but didn't seem to get the basics down properly
  • I know the different forms of traversal are being encouraged but sprinting can be useful in small spaces
  • The game feels very poorly designed when looking at the way the challenges and enemies are done. Makes me feel like the game designers based this off 90s game design.
  • The games solution to making the difficulty in bases higher is to repeatedly keep throwing enemies at you including bullet sponges
  • It seems like the game still has infinite enemies
  • Contrived parts of missions that don't really work all that well but they wanted to do a cool action hero kind of thing.
  • Worst part of the game are the challenges. Upgrades for your gear are locked behind minigames. There are far too many minigames and the room for error on them to get the best score is slim. Luckily you don't need perfect marks on all of them but you have to definitely do decent on them to unlock all the mods possible. But if you don't do extremely well on them beforehand then you won't unlock the mods you might want until you are closer to the end of the game. It is incredibly silly and bad design to give the player the best stuff they can use when they have the least time to use it. There is no new game plus so you don't get to have as much fun with the best stuff. Seems Avalanche thought to lock the best stuff away from the community and make them do a stupid amount of work for them.

Suggestion:
  • Make the mods based around item use for which they are attached to. Grenade mods? Do it based off grenade kills. Maybe even how many you kill with a single one. How many grenade kills you get while parachuting. Wingsuit mods? Based on total time spent in the air. C4 mods? Based on cars boosted, enemies stickied with C4, explosions from C4.
  • Do the same thing with rebel drops, ammo, etc. Let me get double special ammo through continued use of special weapons.
  • This game, like Saints Row series has a wackiness/goofiness that it should embrace from Just Cause 2. It feels like a game that could be way more fun if there was stuff to get infinite ammo or crazier stuff going like crazy physics from melee attacks. Although it doesn't NEED to have that. It would be a better mode than "noir mode" or other easter eggs like famous weapons you can look at.

Overall, the game is a huge disappointment for me and I'm surprised I could come out disappointed with a game in this series. If there is a successor, I hold that the team that did this one does not work on it and the JC2 team actually try to improve on the series, not move backwards. The game is probably a 5 or 6 for me. Not sure if I will continue to mess around in the world or actually just uninstall and/or sell the game.

It feels like they completely borked the controls compared to Just Cause 2. Parachuting feels awful and Rico as a whole feels stiff as hell. I'm not sure if I'm just completely out of practice or what.

Blast Corps + Bionic Commando + a bit of FC4

Best traversal in an open world game for sure, well, apart from the vehicles - although it does give the game more of an old school arcade feel. Just wish you could customize controls more (so cancelling grapples doesn't also slow you down while wingsuiting).

Need a mod for a longer grappling hook too. Bit disappointing it's not an unlock.

Also, manual saves does kinda make setting up and retrying stunts kind of hard. Teleport mod I guess...

I've played 23 hours and it hasn't got any better. Movement/traversal in this game seems to be a love it or hate it thing, and I think those that played JC2 might lean towards the latter. Just an impression I've got from reading comments.

JC2 didn't have the wingsuit...even the flying mod for it doesn't compare well. You're like a bird in JC3! Levelled up anyway.

Just beat this yesterday. Was really fun and i'll probably go back and do some challenges and get as many trophies as i can muster.

I didn't have any technical problems on ps4 pre/post patch other then 2 separate times where the game just crashed

Unlocked all the settlements that i could before advancing the story and doing all the story missions back to back it's easy to see that there's a heavy reliance on escort/protect your ally type missions which is pretty annoying. Other than that my only other issue would be that upgrades could have been handled a bit better although frankly i didn't mind the way they are now, it just seemed like the obvious decision would have been to tie them to the chaos and destruction you cause.

I don't really have the best imagination when it comes to finding creative ways to destroy settlements and what not so i usually just settled for the most conventional method and i had a blast. I could easily see anyone who possesses that kind of creativity having the fun factor increase tenfold

Okay, the bugs/design issues in this are really starting to piss me off:

- After the 1.02 patch, instruments never load for townsfolk playing post liberation, so everyone is just playing air guitar

- Vehicle drops that explode for no reason when they land and then you're out of a vehicle until the timer resets

- wonky vehicle vehicles that will randomly destroy what you're attempting to drive

- A certain town that has a vehicle drop off point THAT YOU CANNOT ACCESS BY CAR.

- Flak cannon sounds that randomly drop out

- The framerate still is an issue

This shit needs another patch, like as soon as the Christmas break is over. Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't one.

Yeah, I've had vehicles randomly disappear when I am driving them. I just get tossed forward and they are gone. The HUD still thinks they are there. I am getting a lot of crashes back to the PS4 dash as well. This game has done it 6 times already. I've only had it happen one other time in a game before. IDK what is going on here. I hope Avalanche continues to patch because the game still needs more work.

Also, it kind of sucks that vehicles continue to just roll sometimes. Kind of fucks up things when you want to tow cars or boats. Also, tether strength is shit. Upgraded twice and still snaps pretty easily. This game needs to be played on PC instead.

It's been awhile since I've played JC2 so I had no idea if I was just misremembering the mechanics or what. I've finally gotten the hang of the wing suit but...I dunno. I'm not having nearly as much fun with this as I did JC2. It just doesn't seem to be as much fun to play. I'll give it a couple more hours before I decide to delete it or not.
