"Madden NFL 11 once again made August 'Madden Month' at retail," says NPD's Anita Frazier. "Sales of this year's game were about 6% higher than last year's in its debut month, but interestingly, all of the gains occurred on the PS3 platform, reflecting the impact of the hardware sales momentum on corresponding software sales."

Blizzard's PC game Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty -- had it qualified as a console video game -- actually would hit the charts with more than 300,000 copies sold. "In fact, PC games retail dollar sales saw a 35% increase over last August," Frazier says.

However, sales were not enough to prevent the industry's fifth straight decline. Total sales of video games, systems and accessories amounted to about $819 million, 10% below August 2009, according to NPD's report. Hardware sales dropped 5%, while software sales dropped 14%.

"In fact, this month reflected the lowest sales for August since 2006," says NPD's Anita Frazier. "While all categories are down in both dollars and units, the portable portion of the industry is down to a greater extent than is the console portion."

EviLore is on his 30 day JetBlue vacations, so I guess he has other more important things to care about. =P

Wowzers. Go 360. I guess with Reach MS is gonna dominate next month too.

How much of a YOY drop off is that for the Wii? Sheesh.

No EviLore makes for a weird NPD day indeed
It's been like this for quite some time.

Wow at sales

Next month should start to pick up right? With the summer gone and Halo in.

Damn, 360 on top for 3rd month in a row?

Also surprised at the Madden PS3 numbers. Pretty big jump even though the game in it's current state on both 360 and PS3 is broken beyond belief.

Nice Mafia II numbers as well, good to see it chart on both systems.

NSMB DS outsells NSMB Wii?

Why?

More DS sold this month than Wii... and NSMB DS is a "must-buy" for a lot of new DS owners

Could also argue that SMG 2 is drawing some of the Wii owners away from NSMB Wii. Probably not but maybe enough to make that difference.

I'm going with this one. Does anyone have cumulative sales to add to the numbers in the first post?

edit: WTF @ NSMB. That game is a centipede in stilettos.

Wow, the drop off from 2 to 3 is massive. I guess Madden was the only noteworthy release of the month.

360 is really going strong. If Natal is a surprise hit, Microsoft could end up being a regular @ the top dawg spot. Should be interesting to see what happens there. I like to see Nintendo on top, though, I can see Wii Party and the other big Wii releases pushing it back on top as long as Natal doesn't achieve fad status.

Overall it's another boring month. Things should perk up a bit next month with Halo and Other M being in it.

I'm replying to this one because you're on the Dudebro team.

1. Congrats to 360.
2. I'm not sure if PS3 is doing well by being so close to Wii, or Wii is just really bombing by being really close to PS3.
3. Surprised at how close the Maddens are. Isn't that usually more heavily in favor of the 360?
4. How the fuck is MW2 still on the list?
5. These are pretty sad numbers for Mafia II, aren't they?

It's not that hard to grasp really. This is why you don't make sequel after sequel and you protect your brand.

3 of the Top 6 games in the month are Mario games. One of which is older than the other 9 games in the Top 10 combined.
