You know I never really ventured out too much in Philly other than the general Germantown,chestnuthill,cheltenham areas. What's some fun things to do in fish town etc

Go to Heritage in No Libs and score an awesome dinner and listen to jazz. Go across the street and bowl a frame. Walk ten minutes to Girard and Frankford and see a show/play pool at Johnny Brendas. Grab a cheesesteak across the street. Walk a few minutes to La Colombe and grab a coffee before they close at 9pm to keep you going for the rest of the night. Head over to Frankford Hall and sit around a bonfire and make smores while drinking absurdly large servings of beer. Go to some galleries in the area. There's tons to do there.

I got a late lunch at Wursthaus Schmitz once (had nothing for breakfast) and was violently ill later that night, would never go again

I tried it like 3 years ago because I like German food but all the options in the area are basically college bars. Haven't been back to reading terminal since, even though the place was basically my grocery store back in college.

I should also mention that I'm Puerto Rican and can't really move into a neighborhood with knowing if it's safe to be a minority there.

I've read some stories about Fishtown back in the day being a racist enclave.

Don't really think that's much of an issue in that neighborhood anymore because it's gentrifying. You might hear some racist vitriol that all minorities face in certain neighborhoods or in south philly, but it's not really dangerous to live in because you're a minority. It can be dangerous to live in some areas mostly because those areas are dangerous. Spring Garden actually used to have a very large Puerto Rican population and still does to some extent, so that neighborhood could be ok for you. East Passyunk has a lot of hispanic/latino residents.

Just make sure to get an apple fritter at Beiler's, the donut place in the northwest corner. Probably the best $1 you can spend in that place, maybe the city. The line will be long but stick with it. It moves quick.

Tier II eh? well I don't have much experience and looking for something that isn't too far. Maybe if they have a spot that would fit my experience hopefully.I applied for the The Philadelphia Contributionship would be a perfect start for me, its within a good distance and a help desk job. I sent a few follow up emails hoping to know when the interview process will take place but no reply. So I'll just keep applying to places and hope they call me for an interview.

One night in Manayunk I was told that I'll fit in there because I'm not one of those kind of people and my radar went up.

Is there a lot of racism out there?

Honestly as a white guy I'm probably not the most qualified person to comment on this. My wife has been harassed once on the street when she was called a chink and told to go back to China in the 8-9 years we've lived in the city. She's never felt uncomfortable because of her race that I know of. Philadelphia has a larger black population than white population and has for a long time. I think the city is more tolerant than most places in the US, but you're always going to have bad apples. In some of the blue collar neighborhoods of the city you're going to get crotchety old out of touch white racists, just like you will all over the US.

Anyway because I am white I'm going to give the nod to the minority posters on here to give you better guidance than I can. I can't put myself in your shoes and it's really not right for me to try.

We just hired a Tier 1 like 3 weeks ago( and we are so understaffed) I think the City is hiring for help desk. Also try Blue Cross the call center on 19th and Market is always hiring as well.

wow! where do you work? you can PM it if you don't want to post here. I tried Blue Cross the weekend haven't seen anything. The City I have a buddy of mine searching in city hall when a spot opens he'd let me know.

I'm newer out in Philly (been out here a few years) but yeah...the racisms mixed a bit, in a lotta ways it's better than some places I've been and in other places it's a bit weirder.

Alotta Philly White ppl think they're better at the racism game cause in the city things are mixed more than some places, but yeah you'll still get occasional comments by ppl that think they "get it". I'm Mexican which is a bit weirder at times, because to some ppl I guess, I look close enough to Italian so they'll tell me how they really feel, or they'll say stuff about illegals and I have to do the double take.

Idk, Philly is better than some areas in this regard, but it's still there and there's alotta work that needs to be done. I work at Temple and it's cool cause it's a really diverse campus and that's not treated like a weird or dynamic thing at times.

This is just my take as somebody who's only been out here for a few years (I was living in California before)

I am going to the new Whole Foods today. I wonder if it will live up to the hype.

We're also having dinner at Laurel tonight. Could only get reservations at 9:15 though, which blows.

Good thing I'm fortunate enough to be close enough to the gig that I can walk to work. But I do take the bus on those biting cold sub-zero days.

Hah. Can't say I ever have but I'm only up in that area once every few weeks for meetings. I'll keep an eye out.

The expanded one on the Main Line is really nice (and good lord did it need an expansion lol). I want to see the one on Hamilton Ave, that's the one I usually go to (when it was on Callowhill). I don't know what they can do to expand the South Street one. I think it's a pretty decent size.
