I think he's sincere, but I also think this apology was a wasted opportunity. It would have been great if he took it as a chance to help educate his fans on why he regrets saying what he did and why others should be a little more mindful with how they speak in games as well.

He hasn't been punished yet. He never will. It's ok for PewDiePie to be a racist. As long as he makes YouTube money.

The funny thing is that the only people facing punishment for PDP's actions are smaller channels that can't get over the hurdle of the Adpocalypse. If the gaming channel model on Youtube becomes unsustainable, then PDP won't be hurt because his brand has already become a religion at this point. He can easily find another niche.

As I said previously the biggest achievement these YouTubers/streamers have ever made was convincing people that what they do requires talent and hard work.
There is nothing that PewDiePie does that 90% of the population couldn't do.
He simply got lucky and was in the right place at the right time.

"Cultivating new" audiences lmao...more like YouTube's algorithm shoving them in the faces of specific demographics.

This is not a conversation for this thread, but you are hilariously wrong. Countless people try to stream games for a living a fail. It absolutely can be hard work, and yes, a lot of it is simply personality based, but so are talk show and radio hosts. Doesn't mean it doesn't require talent or work.

The apology seemed sincere, but so did his slur the other day.

Which would you trust? The one said out of instinct, or the one planned and edited?

You know who the real victim is here?
Mel Gibson.
The guy got blackballed for a decade because of something he did in private and he could have just have gotten away with it if he was just a plucky millionaire youtuber.

"Extremists on all sides" Fuck outta here with this transparent bullsht. Literally quoting Trump. Thinking it's not cool to call someone a nigger is extreme now? That's where we are according to you?

Who's this "we" you're talking about? I'm not quoting trump. I am completely against what he did. It was wrong on many levels that he himself may not even realize.

I also know we're all people who can become better versions of ourselves. I also think it's a microcosm of a larger issue in Gaming culture where saying the N word, saying retard, saying gay, became normalized and I don't know how we stop it.

The thing is, he does not regret it. It really shows.

No, because if you watch the original stream its obvious he thinks the whole thing was a joke. It's not sincere.

1. He is a racist. Just so we're perfectly clear
2. This story made it to fucking BBC. Even if he doesn't lose viewers dude still knows that calling someone a fucking nigger then going on with life will tank his brand no matter what. He had to say something

But again, he said sorry. Am I required to forgive him now? Like is that what will make this not a both sides thing? He apologizes for saying fucking nigger and I sweep it under the rug because "hey they are just words right?"

Only watched the short clip so if there was something else after that then I admit I'm wrong, but "it's just a word" is exactly what he didn't say and could've said and you know his fanbase would eat it up. I'm not following him but afaik he already lost his partnership with youtube and disney so his brand now is merchandise, ads and subs revenue which weren't affected by this.

The apology seemed very sincere.

I am looking forward to how sincere the next apology for the exact same behavior will be.

This will be the sixth time we have apologised, and we have become exceedingly efficient at it.

Nah, while obviously luck and timing plays a part, there is a certain skill set needed to be successful on YouTube. The thing is, being skilled/talented doesn't prevent an individual from being a complete shithead

Echoing what many have said.

He fucked up, he apologized (and it seemed pretty sincere).

The proof will be in his future actions. Hope he learned from it.

"We" is society. And your both sides shit is directly out of the Trump playbook. Think about that. It's a completely pointless thing to mention. Who are the "extremists" in this thread or the prior thread on the side of "Saying Nigger is wrong"? Explain that to me. Explain why it's necessary for people like you to constantly play the both sides card no matter the situation?

As far as how we stop it? We hopefully stop it by calling out people when they use it, and hope that it makes them realize why it's wrong. We don't stop it by playing the "All Sides" card and giving them an excuse to deflect from the issue.

This is hilariously wrong and this thread isn't the place for a discussion centered around this subject.

A famous Youtuber/bodybuilder was under fire recently for the exact same thing as Mel Gibson but I wouldn't recommend getting out of it the way he did.

Hey, this apology at least felt very sincere and telling all the points most people have previously criticized, not blaming anyone but himself. Right thing to do.

This is my take on this too. I know how casually the word is used in Sweden too out of the medias attention so he could've pulled in those strings too, but he didn't.
Other than that. He really need a shave lol

It's really not though. I don't know where this is coming from. Maybe it's more common in some circles / parts of the country, which says more about the prevalence of casual racism (or Vardagsrasism) in some circles than anything, but it's not common in all of Sweden.

It wouldn't be hard for PDP to get credit for this apology. He could donate a bunch of money to BLM and the ADL. Maybe make a video about how racism and white supremacy is a moral abomination and put that on his channel.

He won't, though.

It's good that he's unreservedly apologised for what he said. I don't for a moment believe he genuinely holds racist views, but that doesn't take away from the importance of what he said.

And frankly, the total racist shitshow in the comment section is exactly why it's such a big deal when public figures like Felix slip up like this. I reported over 50 hate-speech comments in about 15 minutes alone.

Here's about ten minutes worth of comments, there are more every time you refresh the page.

This is why it matters, because it normalises vile, racist language among a very young, impressionable audience who are already over-exposed to alt-right 'culture' and language. It wrongly teaches them that it's acceptable to use one of the most highly charged racial slurs in the English lexicon.

While I appreciate his apology, I really think he needs to address the topic head-on. I think he's more than capable of doing that, I do genuinely believe he understands why it's so unacceptable for someone in his position to use that word in the way he did, but I think he needs to make it clear to those who follow and look up to him - particularly his younger subscribers - why it's not okay. He's in a position of responsibility and influence, and he really needs to use that as a positive platform.

There are people looking up to some lame ass streamers? So what do they do, copy the accent, grow a beard, start streaming?

I'm suprised he didn't apologise to other Youtubers for putting their livelihoods at risk. Since more people seem to be offended by that than the word itself.

He hasn't been punished yet. He never will. It's ok for PewDiePie to be a racist. As long as he makes YouTube money.

Honestly, how much money can he be making YT that he is worth this much trouble?

I mean I assume he makes a few million a year so YT is making 3-4 times that from him? Is 5-10 million really worth taking a hit to their reputation to a company this big?

I dont think YT are reluctant to ban him because of the money he makes, its a molecule in an ocean. I imagine they havent done it either because it sets an uncomfortable precedent or YT doesnt really have a centralized person in charge making those calls.

Missed that, any details?

You assume he cares enough to do anything about it.
Fighting white supremacy and not fucking it up would only improve the situation for his competition. Burn it all up and you're sure he's going to come out on top.

How many times is the asshole going to get off scot free? At this point I'm angrier at YouTube than I am with Pewdiepie. This shit still happening after everything he's done and they're just going to let it continue to happen and continue to allow their platform host vile hatred. Fuck this shit.

A surprisingly kind apology. I didn't expect that. I was expecting a bunch of excuses but he didn't even do that. He just admitted it to being wrong.
