and people are saying third party isnt selling on wii. Maybe compared to Nintendo itself no, but Nintendo is a self perpetuating monster and shouldnt have its own sales compared to third party. but Third party IS selling fairly well by that graph.
That's cumulative though and you have to bear in mind that more titles have been released on Wii than PS3. That being said it's still better than PS3 but far from being foolproof territory for publishers.

Do you honestly expect any of the new consoles to beat cumulative third party software sales on a proven console like PS2 this early in their respective life-cycle?

I don't have any numbers to crunch or anything but in retrospect the situation on DS was comparable. A lot of crap third party games got released early on to mixed success (most failed) and we were having the same discussions.

It might not work out on Wii like it did on DS but just as with DS devs and publishers have to come to grips with the system and it's userbase. Like I said, there is no proven formula for success since Wii strays away a fair bit from the usual, like the DS.

JoshuaJSlone did that comparison (PS2) a week or two ago, as well. I think the PS2 is comparable to the Wii, but clearly ahead.

This is true, but people tend to forget that PS2 also had a really shitty first year as far as quality software is concerned. I don't think comparing sales of shitty games really gives a clear perspective as to what 3rd party sales potential really is. We'll have a better idea of how third party games on Wii fare once some geniuinely great ones start coming out. We can compare those games (actually good and actually marketed 3rd party Wii games) to PS2 or DS's good third party games.

Looks like Hometek took care of Tamagotchi in USA :lol

Corner Shop 3 is actually Tamagotchi no Appare! Niji-Venture:

Wii and DS dev kits are relatively cheap:

That's on par with the costs of buying a bunch of Photoshop and 3D Studio MAX/Maya licenses.

BTW, MC still haven't updated their site with the HW or did I miss the memo?

Unless you're Nintendo or have an especially hot brand, it seems that way thus far. It would be interesting to add "PS2 since November 2006" to the list, but I don't know where I'd find a decent breakdown like the DS/PSP and X360/PS3/Wii data we have. It'll be forever and a day until we have, say, the Top 500 2007 info to see how things are overall this year.

I've looked at PS2 software sales through 30 and 40 weeks before, but haven't gone further. I've been planning on updating it to week 52; maybe I should stop halfway through the additions to see how its bars would look at a similar age as Wii and PS3.

My question is are Wii third party titles really selling THAT much worse than PS2's first year third party titles?

So I updated PS2 through week 45, which puts it through the first week in January, 2001. I may have missed something Sony-published, because their list seems incredibly weak. However, by grabbing the ones with publisher listed as SCE I only get Fantavision, "Scandal", Blood: The Last Vampire, Dark Cloud, I.Q. Remix+, and TVDJ.

20071012dalthienbarplus.png

Top 10 PS2 games at this time (all of those above 250K, incidentally):
Ridge Racer V
Gekikuukan Pro Baseball: At the End of the Century 1999
Tekken TAG TOURNAMENT
Kessen
Dead or Alive 2
Jikkyou Powerful Pro baseball 7
Shin Sangoku Musou
The Bouncer
Mobile Suit Gundam
FIFA Soccer World Championship

So Wii software is ahead of PS2 software, but over 3/4 of Wii game sales are 1st-party. Ouch.

So, if you're a publisher:

1. Support the Wii and have low sales.
2. Support the PS3/360 and have even lower sales.
3. Support the DS/PSP and clean up.
4. Make cell phone games and constantly feel sick to your stomach.

Actually, if I were a publisher, I'd try to grab a piece of the Wii market that's not being addressed by Nintendo, instead of scrambling for the leftover crumbs of the party game or kiddie market. But that's just me.

Maybe not thats only PS2 third party.

Don't know what first party sales are but if you add those they might put PS2 in the lead. For some reason I just don't feel right counting a controller than comes with a 10 dollar mini-game collection as part of software sales. So the 1st party/3rd party ratio is no that bad for the Wii.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
What do we care so much about third(or whatever) party companies for? They're all just games, I'm sure some of them will manage to catch up but so what if in Japan the future becomes primarily dominated by Nintendo software? The reality is nothing is or has stopped any third party from stepping up to the plate themselves. Most of them have been losing customers for many years, with or without Nintendo's help. Whether or not these third parties are successful on the Wii or the DS doesn't change the routes of this industry as much anymore.

There must be a lot of sales in the under-30 section; perhaps several million. I count Wii software at ~8.9 million, but according to the Famitsu pie chats PS2 has beat it in software sales well over half of the weeks. Of course all weeks not being equal we can't tell what the total difference is, but PS2 should at least be over 9 million.

The bottom line is that IF third parties supported Wii as much as they supported PS2 in this opening period, then everything will look MUCH different.

Nintendo is highly competitive, but many people who enjoy Nintendo games also enjoy blockbuster titles from third parties - titles that if Nintendo tried to compete with, they'd lose because these markets are specific third party's ball parks, and not Nintendo's.

So basically, "Third parties don't sell on Wii" is only true if third party choose not to. And they have chosen not to thus far. All they have done is put out product that doesn't suit the market (PS2 games with tacked on controls. I'd prefer to play it the way it has been designed, mostly), and shovelware which would have sold about as poorly on PS2 in its opening period.

Looking at graphs like for the third party sales on Wii against PS2 is heavily misleading. What would it look like if Wii got all of this support, and PS2 got shitty shovelware, some ports with tacked on controls, and the odd good title? All with Nintendo still supporting Wii just as much? Something very different.

Third parties don't sell on ANY console if it's a game the market ain't interested in.

Noone thought the Wii would demolish the competition so much, that's why third party release PS2 ports with tacked on waggle. Ground up Wii made games will take time and it's these sales that will show how third party do. Zack and Wiki, King story, MH3, FFCC (to some extent), Sonic and Mario at the olympics, that new tales games. Those are the games that matter. The only game that show any effort put into so far is Dewy, but everyone knows the story with that. Bottom line if third party want money on the Wii, they better put their ass to work (no not in that way for you bended people).

For the theory that third parties struggle on Nintendo consoles because they're Nintendo consoles, there is a need to consider two systems: SNES and PS3.

For japan, if the situation stays the same, WII/DS will be the market and people will buy 3rd party games because it will be the only choice. For the west, ps3/X360 are still alive and may be prefered (I know I will) unless the games are original and without comparison (not like SCIV/SC Legends).

Ye, but what about full retail with box and everything? :) Damn, a true sequel to Super Mario World would be amazing. I wonder why they didnt make one. They did make Yoshi's Island and thats SMW 2 tho, but i dont concider that as a true sequel in that fashion because Yoshi is the main character. Yoshi's Island is a great game tho, but i want another Super Mario World game too :))

FFXII international was a megabomba compared to previous international editions. I remember pre-release how everyone thought FFXII was going to move upwards in the hierarchy of FF game sales... and then it didn't.

LTTP, but holy crap, I can't believe Wii is about to hit the shitter like the PS3. Nintendo has really squandered its potential success. I guess Nintendo thought Wii was going to be like DS, where a couple of games like Brain Training, Nintendogs, and New Super Mario Bros. would perpetually keep sales high. Hasn't happened. Should've been better prepared.

:lol It's like a fish story. I've seen things like this in a few threads in recent weeks, but each time DS is doing worse and worse. In early 2005 DS was behind PSP for 10 straight weeks (more than half the total number of weeks it's been behind). During that time it had seven consecutive weeks of being between 20 and 30K. Throughout the rest of 2005 it did have several more weeks in the 20Ks and plenty in the 30Ks, though.

Aside from exaggerated DS badness, though, Wii is having a much better 2007 than DS had a 2005.

With the way DS exploded at the end of 2005, there's certainly room for Wii to fall behind before the year is done, but I doubt it.

Wii fit is the real deal. 3D Mario will not impress Japan. A 2D mario on the Wii would kill the market definitely.

I like the concept of "Fish Story". :lol Anyway I know I was not very precise. I remember that for several weeks (months) the DS was doing relativity bad in Japan, until some key games came out. Wii is doing the same thing and the cause is also the same: lack of blockbusters.

DS started to skyrocked with Jump Super Star, Nintendogs and later with Brain Training. Wii probably will do the same with Mario Galaxy, Wii Fit and later, with Super Smash Bros.

I see many affinities with the DS personally, even for what concern the shipment times.

Media Create top 100 sales and Dengeki software sales give a good hint of the weekly Famitsu total sales. Also I have the actual Famitsu numbers for a lot of weeks and they usually prove that my estimations are close. For example I have Famitsu numbers for Nov 06 - March 07 thanks to the geimin site.
