NPD December 2012 Sales Results [Up2: Xbox 360, All Nintendo Hardware, NSMB Wii U]

Why are people blaming the market for the poor Wii U performance? If MS/Sony pushed such an underwhelming product id expect it to be ignored too. I fully expect Sony/MS to conjure up far more confidence and hype due to games offering significantly richer experiences. Next gen COD with next gen XBL/PSN alone will ensure a promising start.

Also, Vita sales for December were between 200-250k.

In other news, 3DS most likely sold more units in December than Vita LTD.

200-250k for a system that's anything but alive according to some people doesn't seem that bad, Sony still has time to pull a Phoenix Wright and turn things around.

Did you catch the last line of my post?

In other news, 3DS most likely sold more units in December than Vita LTD.

Who would choose to make a Vita game with such lousy relative (and absolute) sales?

In fainess, the 3ds doesn't move any software either. They both are going to wind up dependent on first party. Nintendo can probably make a living off that, and sony probably can't.

Didn't look at the rest closely but your 2007 list is wrong. Halo 3 was easily the top selling SKU of the year.

THE WORDS! They'll drift away without the _!
NPD 2007:
  • 1) Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat (360, Activision)
  • 2) Super Mario Galaxy (Wii, Nintendo)
  • 3) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PS2, Activision)
  • 4) Wii Play with Wii Remote (Wii, Nintendo)
  • 5) Assassin's Creed (360, Ubisoft)
  • 6) Halo 3 (360, Microsoft)
  • 7) Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day (DS, Nintendo)
  • 8) Madden NFL 08 (PS2, Electronic Arts)
  • 9) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (360, Activision)
  • 10) Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii, Sega)

Fairly sure this is the December chart, not the yearly.
Rest look good on first glance.

Surprised 3DS sold so well.

It sold well, but a bit disappointing when compared to last year.

Considering it's holiday lineup though (Paper Mario, Layton, and...) it sold well for what it is. I expect monstrous numbers this year, with Pokemon and Animal Crossing now in the mix.

NPD 2004:
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2)
Halo 2 (Xbox) - 4.2 million
Madden NFL 2005 (PS2)

Pokemon FireRed (with adapter) (GBA)
NBA Live 2005 (PS2)
Spider-Man 2 (PS2)
Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
ESPN NFL 2K5 (Xbox)

This makes me sad. Yeah yeah $19.99.

So as usual I dont feel like combing 47 pages, did we ever get a PS3 number better than ~625k?

Which was based on taking the middle of creamsugers PS3 <600k<PS3<650k, right?

Mario Kart and 3D Land were released.

Because they have nothing good to say. Who would put out a pr that says "our console is dying and our handheld was doa"?

Least they could do is issue a press release saying "PS3 is hitting its stride while PSVita is just getting warmed up for its marathon race."

Mario Kart and 3D Land were released.
Which explains its better sales last year. New titles, and bundles for the new titles helped propel the system to big heights that year.

They pretty much relied on them again last year and threw NSMB2 and Paper Mario into the mix. Hell, they didn't even give NSMB2 it's own bundle despite a special edition bundle existing elsewhere for whatever dumb reason and just stuck 3D Land and MK7 into existing 3DS colors. Hopefully this year there's more of a focus on their more recent titles.

This is a picture from the preparations for tomorrow's official launch of the Wii U in Peru (Even though it's been on shelves since Dec 22nd), I don't know if this means that we'll actually see Nintendo officially back in Latin America again, I guess we'll know tomorrow for sure.

Do you have Nintendo reports from that time?

There are sources that cite NPD figures between 1.8 and 2 million for N64 sales in 1996, including 290k on its first month (Sep, 1996).

Edit: blast from the past: http://wayback.archive.org/web/19961112125805/http://www.npd.com/toyspr1.htm

I admit that I'm going from memory, but that's from Next Generation magazine, which I do still have. I'll take a look when I get home. Maybe it was just for the actual launch day.

There's no way the N64 did 2 million in '96. I don't see any figures on your link, just a ranking?

edit: now that I think about it, I believe there was an article the next year about how they diverted N64's from Japan to meet demand in the US for Christmas. I'll look for that as well. Still no way they hit 2 million. 2 million would make the N64 the best-selling system at launch, ever, in the U.S., over the first 4 months. We'd have been dogging on every other system launch since then for not doing better. Just no way.

edit2: after a couple of google searches, clearly I was wrong and the 250k was the launch shipment.

Don't know if anyone still cares - it was back a ways and a bit off-topic, but here's the info I promised from Next Generation magazine. It seems Nintendo was pulling a fast one, claiming they'd only have 250k units for launch and another 250k through Christmas available, for a total of just 500k for 1996. But, according to Next Gen magazine:

The blurb right before that one cites the same data as the link you gave, Road, a 61% market share of hardware that month according to TRST (NPD). And then:

The end of that sentence, at the top of the next column, is "worldwide) by the end of 1996. So it looks like 1.7 million is the correct total for 1996. Impressive! And according to the same article, it took the Playstation a full 13 months - from its September 1995 launch through September 1996 - to reach approximately the same figure (1.74 million) in North America.

Goes to show that launches aren't everything; we all know how that race ended.

NPD is going to be worthless at reflecting the overall state of software next gen. DD on consoles is going to continue to ramp up, while software at retail continues to decline.

The information will still be mighty relevant, but only to those have access to the full juicy data. As it is, NPD for everyone else ends up being just grouped sales with no breakdowns like some time ago.

Has anyone released a larger number of exclusive bombs in a single year as the PS3 did in 2012?

I guess they need to create more hits than the same old franchises everyone's getting bored of. Plain old fashioned franchise fatigue.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Put a few more hours into zombiu tonight. What an awesome, unique experience. I'd like another one so tell your Wii u friends to pick it up, yah?

Well I'd also like a new no more heroes but I don't see that one happening either heh

When I met Suda51 at PAX East last year I told him I was only going to buy Lollipop Chainsaw if he promised we'd get a No More Heroes 3. He smiled and said deal.

I hope he didn't troll me. :(

NPD 2004:
  1. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2)
  2. Halo 2 (Xbox) - 4.2 million
  3. Madden NFL 2005 (PS2)
  4. ESPN NFL 2K5 (PS2)

  7. NBA Live 2005 (PS2)
  8. Spider-Man 2 (PS2)
  9. Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
  10. ESPN NFL 2K5 (Xbox)

So by chart position, the best year for Halo CE was 2004. Those legs.

Yes because a karting spinoff, Relaunch of an IP from a bygone era that targeted the lowest common denominator, and a SSB-ripoff is truly new and revolutionary.

Oh please, the most genuinely creative thing Sony released all year was Wonderbook and Journey.

Whats amusing is that people are ready to ignore Sony's shortcomings and then throw their weight behind a small Digital release, but when Microsoft focuses on XBLA, their efforts are mocked or ignored.
