NPD December 2012 Sales Results [Up2: Xbox 360, All Nintendo Hardware, NSMB Wii U]

Yes because a karting spinoff, Relaunch of an IP from a bygone era that targeted the lowest common denominator, and a SSB-ripoff is truly new and revolutionary.

Oh please, the most genuinely creative thing Sony released all year was Wonderbook and Journey.

A new hit doesn't need to be original in anyway, but yes that does explain why those games aren't exactly flying off the shelves.

I have to wonder if LBP is going to keep being made. All of the Vita numbers are low, but that one is really low.

Sony seems to support this franchise "no matter what" in terms of demand so I wouldn't be surprised to see a LBP PS4 launch title.

RE5 did 1.52 mill first month for reference.

So RE6 is massively underselling RE5.

I thought this would be interesting since NPD revealed the top selling games of 2012 in North America.

Here's the top selling games for each year in North America since 2001.

2011 and 2012 are combined platforms. Before that the NPDs did the top 10 based on single skus, so the lists look a little different prior to 2011. I didn't list 2012, because it's already in the original post.

Goodness, Madden is consistently in the top 10. Really brings it home how devastating not having Madden on the Dreamcast must've been.
So by chart position, the best year for Halo CE was 2004. Those legs.
It was called the Halo-box for a reason.

I had no idea how big Nintendo 64 was in 1996. Very nice start.

But by that old PDF, Genesis outsold SNES in U.S. I guess NPD was not reliable at the 90's.

I think Sackboy is the first genuinely appealing 'mascot' character they've managed to create outside of torotoro or whatever in Japan. He's worth keeping around imo.

Call of Duty Vita doing over 300k in the US alone is more than i thought. I thought maybe the game was 250k - 300k worldwide by now (i'm including bundles in this number). It wouldnt surprise me if it has sold closer to 500k worldwide by now, including digital sales. Hopefully this means they will make another COD Vita game. I enjoyed the first one, but it could be done much better (i'm missing the titles and emblems unlocking the most. It has challenges, but you only get points for them, no titles or emblems).

The Call of Duty series peaked with Black Ops. MW3 sold less than BO and BO2 has sold less than MW3 so far.

The writing was definitely on the wall when MW3 didn't significantly sell more in its first month over CODBLOPS1. I don't think there's anything that Activision can really do at this point, but there's certainly far worse positions to be in than selling "just" 7.5 million copies in a game's first month.

So Sony didn't even attempt to paint a positive picture from the NPD.
Any reason why they would put out a PR statement?

Out of curiousity, i'm honestly wondering why people want PR statements when we already have the aproximate numbers. Is there anything else to be had from PR statements regarding sales numbers?

I don't think this really matters considering the insane numbers it still is doing. Being only a slight bit down after years of yearly releases is a great result.

I remember when salesgaf would try to go back to last year and figure out what the total of all consoles sold would be then estimate all the sales figures based on the pr figures we currently have. Why doesn't anyone do that anymore? I know why I can't do it, I suck at math.

paper mario had a good december. over time, it should at least beat the thousand-year door (it's already ahead of paper mario 64). super paper mario may be out of reach though. i think there's just too much mario on the 3ds in such a short span, and that it's going to always come in fourth behind mk7, nsmb2, and 3d land.

also, i'm not sure if it matters or whatever, but the wii u's attach rate was double what it was in november- not including the nintendo land bundle. overall attach rate is around 1.9:1.

1.9:1 not counting Nintendo Land bundles either? Because that's not too shabby I think, this means most Wii U owners bought another game to accompany Mario :D.

We often gets numbers from the PR statements would be my reason.

MS always gives out their numbers along with some percentages for market share.

Followed by Nintendo who despite poor numbers will often be forthcoming.

Based on the PR data, we are often able to guesstimate and fill in the gaps. If not for these PR statements we would really just be waiting on leaks.

Even with leaks, I rather Sony play ball instead of taking theirs home like a bratty child.

We already get all the ballpark numbers from people who have access to NPD numbers, so there is no much need to do calculation anymore :)

It's only Sony really....
Yeah, in those cases i understand it, if they give out specific numbers. But looking at previous PR statements, particularly from Sony regarding NPD numbers, they have been very vague and no specific numbers have been given. Now that we know the close ballpark numbers for both PS3 and Vita, i dont think there would be much other info to had (maybe other than "hardware accessories are up 10% YOY" or something like that). That is why i was wondering :)

So when you say you're surprised it sold so well, what was your forecast? Down 50%? Down 75%?

I didn't have one, but when I saw 1.25m I was surprised. Being down yoy from 2011 doesn't make it any worse as some heavy hitters (MK7 and 3DLand) launched 2011 holiday which are system sellers.

Is it safe to say now Fifa is a bigger franchise then Madden worldwide?

I didnt know it had gotten so huge in the us.

If you didn't have a forecast then you can't be surprised, certainly not by a gross number with no YoY context

FYI they also released a hardware revision for this console in 2012

To be honest, Madden was even huger back during the PS2 days.

But yeah, FIFA is bigger since soccer is popular everywhere.

It seems like Madden is getting back up to those PS2 levels though. It appeared to be declining for a bit during the midpoint of this gen.

Yeah it seems to be.

The game has gotten out of the funk that it was in back 4-5 years ago. If they keep it up, next gen Madden may get the series back to the PS2 days in terms of reception.

299.999 people that won't buy the next entry given the abysmal quality of Declassifies. Also: bundles.

Unless they repeat Madden 06 (360). What a joke

Yeah, I really hope that they won't have a huge start over like they did back then.

If they would have just made a HD port of Madden 06 on the PS2/Xbox, they would have been in a much better position this gen.

Sony had no problem with a post black Friday PR statement did they?
Nope, but then they had some good news. Is there any news worthy things for Sony in this December's NPD that is worth putting out a PR statement for?

299.999 people that won't buy the next entry given the abysmal quality of Declassifies. Also: bundles.
Yeah, i know bundles are included, i expected 250k - 300k worldwide by now as mentioned even with bundles =)

You think so? Personally i think that as long as a game is improved, this is what a lot of people will notice and care most about. It will be a new game afterall. If a previous game is bad, it is possible to learn from this and improve things in the next game. But as long as the game is being made (nothing is guaranteed yet) and is fun to play, it doesnt matter that much to me how it sells. The game excist and it is just as fun or boring regarding if it sells 1 copy or 10 million copies.

299.999 that wont buy it, but 1 million other people that will buy it instead? :) But at least you're optimistic that one guy who bought COD Declassified will also buy a potential sequel hehe =) (it wont be me, i dont live in the US and i wont import the game from there). Have you played the game by the way?

What the fuck, man. :(
I don't know whether to take that as a sign to be glad 3DS almost certainly isn't going anywhere and will remain a handheld staple despite the advent of mobile, or lament how badly the Vita landed.

... I'd prefer both soar to success and seriously clashed. :/

The information will still be mighty relevant, but only to those have access to the full juicy data. As it is, NPD for everyone else ends up being just grouped sales with no breakdowns like some time ago.

Nope. NPD will not have access to confidential dd figures without consent from parties involved. & since companies like EA see that information as valuable, they will not be sharing it. So nobody is going to have access to all the numbers. It will make these types of threads kinda boring. but there will still be hardware numbers...at least until streaming game device take the place of consoles.

Competition is good. Vita crashing is bad for handhelds in general.

It must be obvious to everyone involved that dedicated handhelds are pretty much a child's product in the USA now. And parents buying toys are incredibly price sensitive. Nobody is going to try to market an upscale handheld going forward. And its not even as if the Vita was all that upscale. $250 is the price of a night in a hotel room, a pair of NFL tickets, or the blu ray boxset for Deadwood at release.

However, even though the 3ds is doing fine, Nintendo will still have to deal with the abysmal attach rate, which is also related to price.

And parents buying toys are incredibly price sensitive.

Unless they're buying Apple stuff. I have a friend who won't buy his kids a Wii game over $20 - so all they have is Wii Sports and 2 Game Party games - but he's bought all 4 of them their own Ipads or Macbooks, and replaced a couple of them with new ones in the time since that Wii was purchased.

As many people have reminded people in this thread, tablets don't just play games.

In other news, New York Times page B1 today:
The smartphone is no longer just a portable computer in your pocket. It has become the remote control for your life.

Want to flip off the living room lights, unlock your front door or get a reading of your blood pressure? All of this can be done through mobile apps that work with accessories embedded with sensors or an Internet connection.

For several years, technology companies have promised the dream of the connected home, the connected body and the connected car. Those connections have proved illusory. But in the last year app-powered accessories have provided the mechanism to actually make the connections. That is partly because smartphones have become the device people never put down. But it is also because wireless sensors have become smaller, cheaper and ubiquitous.

Big companies with strong brands have been heavily promoting the new uses for these gadgets. General Motors advertises its Chevy Malibu Eco with a man showing his parents how he starts the car with a smartphone. A major selling point of the popular Nest thermostat is its ability to turn up the furnace from miles away with a cellphone.

... The idea of turning off the lights with a smartphone may seem gimmicky, but consumers are warming to applications, said Bill Scheffler, director of business development for the Z-Wave Alliance, a consortium of companies that make connected appliances. The situation resembles the time when power windows started catching on for automobiles, or when television makers started offering remote controls, Mr. Scheffler said.

“It used to be that people would say, ‘Why does anybody want a remote control for a TV if you can get up and change the channel?’ ” he said. “It’s just progress.” Companies like AT&T, Black & Decker and Honeywell have started selling app-linked products, he said.

... Ralph de la Vega, chief executive of AT&T Mobility, said in an interview that home security was a big opportunity to increase revenue. Only 20 percent of homes have security systems, he said, leaving millions of homeowners as potential buyers.

“I think it dramatically changes how people feel about their home and how secure they feel about being outside the home,” Mr. de la Vega said. “I think it’s an easy sell.” The company has not announced prices for the service...

Products by several other companies take advantage of a smartphone’s sensors and connection to the Internet to monitor consumers’ health. IHealth sells monitors for people to track their blood pressure with an app. At the electronics show, it introduced a wireless glucose meter, called the Smart Glucometer, that lets people with diabetes determine their blood sugar. A user puts a blood sample on a test strip, pops it into an accessory attached to a smartphone, and an app gives a reading of the blood sugar level.

Adam Lin, general manager of iHealth, declined to say how many products the company had sold, but he said it was in the “six-figure” area. IHealth products have appeared at Apple, Target and Best Buy.

... A small start-up, AliveCor, has created an iPhone case that, when grasped, records an accurate electrocardiogram on the iPhone screen via its app. The company has attracted financing from Khosla Ventures, a prominent Silicon Valley venture capital firm.

Nike, Jawbone and Fitbit sell wearable electronic devices for people to track their movements with smartphones. Fitbit, based in San Francisco, sells a pocket pedometer called the Fitbit One, which can track a user’s steps and floors climbed, and also monitors sleep patterns. Its newest product is due in spring, the Fitbit Flex, a step counter and sleep tracker that is worn around the wrist. It synchronizes with a smartphone app to give users updates.

Woody Scal, chief revenue officer of Fitbit... “In the end, I don’t wake up in the morning, look myself in the mirror and ask whether my TV has enough pixels,” he said. “But I do wonder how I’m going to get enough exercise, eat better, sleep well or manage my weight despite all the other things going on in my life.”

I know a lot of people will read this and roll their eyes because a) the examples mentioned in the article still seem fringe, b) "My life is great already I don't need any of this", c) "My dumbphone is good for making phone calls", etc etc. I've bolded just one portion of this article to respond to all of these. They're not quite there yet, but they're increasingly getting there, and they might not seem necessary, but overall many many things you use every day in your life were never necessary, they just became ubiquitous because they are convenient. You do not get up and walk over and change the dial on your television, period.

I note that this article doesn't explain the half of it, either, in part because of the framing of the title as "life's remote control" they focus on automation type tasks. Smartphones and tablets have replaced the checkbook, the calculator, they've replaced the watch for many people and the calendar, the cookbook, the dictionary, the encyclopedia. The number of things that were things in a house that are no longer there or soon won't be because of smartphones and tablets (and earlier the internet and the home PC) are astronomical.

I never said otherwise, but if you're suggesting they weren't purchased as toys, you're kidding yourself.

A tablet is just the evolution of the laptop or PC. It's a super portable, relatively inexpensive device that offers a plethora of apps for literally everything you could think of, not just gaming. I'm sure there are iOS and Android devices that are purchased solely to be a game machine but would expect that percentage to be quite low.

I don't think it's just that. People didn't buy their 3 and 5 year olds laptops as toys, even though they play games, too. Tablets have more of a crossover with the toy market. My point was, I think that's a bit nuts, given the price.

Yeah. Was in TRU for Black Friday browsing while waiting for the line to go down, and saw toddler-targeted holders for iPads. I had the same double-take you did. "I thought these things were pretty expensive, and they're giving them to toddlers to play with?" I can understand the idea. Toddler-focused apps are available, so instead of buying a dedicated toy for $20, buy an app that's basically the same concept but more fancy and $0.99-$4.99 and interchangeable with other $0.99-$4.99 toddler-focused apps. But the idea of buying a multi-hundred dollar tablet to do so just seems out of whack for me. I realize I'm a bit behind the times (though I do try to read up on stuff a lot), so maybe it's just us old fogies that it doesn't make sense to. *shrugs*
