NPD March 2011 Sales Results [Update 2: Super Street Fighter IV 3D]

Lol Killzone 3. I had hope it would crack the top 10 the following month since Sony loves releasing their games midway or at the end of a month. NOPE! =/

"Now that we're reporting on games at the title rather than SKU level, it's important to note several that sold well and would have made the top 10 on a SKU unit sales ranking basis. Those include Just Dance 2 on Wii, Killzone 3 on PS3, and Zumba Fitness on Wii."

Wii 290k
3DS fewer than 400k
total 1.1m
Pokemon 2.5m
Is it fair to compare the launch of the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo DS?
It really is apples and oranges. When we launched DS we launched going right into the Thanksgiving week (in 2004). From a pure timing seasonality, you are not going to be able to compare the two launches. We are going to be continuing to sell DS and that platform is going to continue to build on its legacy of the best-selling hardware system ever in the US. I would love to have the Nintendo 3DS eclipse that, but this is a new platform that we have just given birth to. I would love to have ongoing comparisons to the DS business because that would certainly mean we are doing a good job growing the Nintendo 3DS business.

There haven't been sellouts of 3DS? Are you purposefully underpromoting it?
I would characterize it as a launch where we learned significant lessons from the launch of Wii and we made sure to have not only ample supply in the marketplace, but we staged supply so it would not sell out. We had product going direct to store and we also had product in retailers (distribution centers), so they could easily replenish when they had stores running low on inventory. That strategy is why you didn't see massive sellouts on Nintendo 3DS. Obviously, a sell-through of 400,000 units in one week is exceptional. And the fact that we achieved that without people being worried about massive stockouts and shortages just underscored how we properly executed our supply chain.

Are there any foreseeable concerns about impacts on 3DS manufacturing with the catastrophes that have hit Japan?
At this point, we can say that there are no negative repercussions to our supply chain from the tragedies in Japan. But as you know it's an evolving situation and it is something we continue to review very closely and attempt to manage as small an impact on our business as possible.

I am happy to see White outselling black, this was the first Pokemon release where I honestly thought it could go either way.

3DS seems to have had a slow start, I doubt it'll pick up until either Mario Kart or Pokemon comes out.

Might explain any dispute about numbers:

The Reggie quote says they sold just under 400,000 in March (end of their fiscal quarter). The NPD tracking period extends until April 2. There are two more days of sales in the NPDs figures (Unless, of course, by "March" Reggie meant "March NPD")

Well it did make the individual SKU top 10, so not a complete fail.

Wow at Homefront. Advertising is king. Dumb developers wasting time and money trying to making good games. Use that money on advertising instead you dummies !!!!

Check the predictions thread. It's not just one or two people. I think the predictions ranged from ~450k to ~1300k.

I had 445k, I originally put ~220k as I thought it only accounted for 2 days sales.

It was confirmed earlier that Killzone 3 would have been in the single version top 10. But the combined version top 10 is going to be a lot harder to chart 2+ months in unless you are a multimillion seller.

How did Marvel do? I can't imagine the word of mouth being any good with a busted and outdated online mode.

Iwata is going to bitch slap Reggie if he hasn't already. Time to lay down the pimp hand Yamauchi style.

Shouldn't Iwata bitch slap himself since they're doing even worse in Japan?

380k for 6-7? days isn't terrible, but I did expect more. Release some more games Nintendo, April is barren.
Yea. Im sure if it was given full 30 days, you would see a bigger number and people would stop with the "omg 3ds doa!!".

Solid number for like 6 days.

Combining the SKUs of 360/PS3 cross-platform games makes some sense but combining SKUs of 360/Wii/DS games is complete nonsense. There is often times virtually no sharing between those different SKUs and a lot of times even the internal developer is different. They are for all practical purposed completely separate games.

Sure, if he wants too. Even after April 3DS hardware sales will be higher in Japan than in the USA. They won't go up this month.

Its even sillier that they separate the two pokemon games like they did. Talk about being consistent.

So we know that combined Pokemon sold well over a million copies, right?
I do believe Nintendo announced over a million sales day 1 of launch. Its probably closer to 2.5-3 Million

Man, 3DS hardware I thought would have sold better. To me it shows pure apathy to the 3DS outside of the hardcore demographic

Also, WTF at Homefront. Not only higher than DA2, but also Crysis 2 and MLB 11. Game is not even on the same level of any of those 3 IMO. Shows what a massive marketing budget can do for a medicore title. :|

So, if 380K for seven days in March means that "3DS=Bob-omba!," what does 480K for fourteen days in a November mean?

Precisely. It's a good start, almost certainly outpacing the DS in a similar timeframe (and that's at a higher price and during a non holiday month to boot!)

DS had nowhere near the hype of 3DS. It was seen largely as a spoiler for PSP.

The successor the most successful handheld of all time has failed to reach expectations.

It reached over a million, iirc. But i am surprised it fell out of the top 10.
