NPD Sales Results for November 2014 [Up3: NPD Data Error, AC:U #5]

My biggest question from this is, if the 7-10k figure is true, how is MS going to gain any momentum in the first half of 2015? They had multiple exclusives and major comarketing deals in October and November along with some extremely aggressive pricing. Before Fall, their 2015 is looking pretty barren.

Wow, no wonder we weren't getting a PR announcement. This is hardly a win for MS...

I agree. A 7k to a 10k difference sure isn't worth celebrating about.

Now if the difference was about between 100k to 300k, or even more, then we'd be talking.

wow Wii U @ 242k, holy shit.

The system is going to be, gosh, 18 million? 17 million? by the end of this gen? Catastrophic and tragic (as tragic as business things can get in gaming world terms anyway). Semi-depressed :(

Don't you mean 10 million?

About those PS3 and 360 sales, I think I got them, just by searching a bit

Nov. 2006 ~ 197.0k
Dec. 2006 ~ 490.7k
Jan. 2007 ~ 244.0k
Feb. 2007 ~ 127.0k

Sep. 2007 ~ 119.4k
Oct. 2007 ~ 121.0k
Nov. 2007 ~ 466.0K

Total ~ 2,447.2K

PS3 + 360 first 13 months total ~ 5847K

Almost 80% increase = between 75% and 80%

So, PS4 + One first 13 months total ~ 10,232.25 < x < 10,524.6

PS4 + One first 12 months total ~ 8,500

PS4 + One November, then, ~ 1,732.25 < x < 2,024.6

EDIT: I'd tend to be wary of estimates with both consoles over 1 million. Not for anything, but because, if that were the case, MS would have certainly said that in their PR, where no number was said at all.

I don't think this boils down simply on the amount of consoles sold. It's the fact that they might be bleeding money through this strategy, much like sony did with the ps3 which cost them the profit they made on the ps2. If they are selling it at 340$ with 3 free games and still can't get to sell more than 10k units than their direct competitor who has yet to make any meaningful move, it doesn't bode well for them. It's about making money, that's for sure, but right now they've backed themselves into a corner, where they've done so much to accomplish so little (IF that cboat comment is true). They can't go back to the old price, and they can't keep slashing prices and adding 3 games forever, it's not a viable strategy. Wasn't sony eating a loss of 150$-200$ on each ps3 sold? They ended up selling 80 million but was what they expected to be, profit wise?

Sometimes it's better to sell less but keep a profit, like Nintendo, than to try (and fail) being a loss leader. I'm happy to see that both sold well (less happy about nintendo though, they deserve more) but in pure business sense I don't really see this as something they're celebrating over at MS. What more can they do? Make it 299$? How much loss per unit are they willing to take? MS has way deeper pockets than Sony but it doesn't paint a pretty picture.

Imagine if Sony announces a 50$ permanent price drop with a year of plus from now on to anyone who purchases the system. They have barely lifted a finger yet. Not that they will, at this pace they will keep the ps4 at regular price forever, it would be good for us, consumers, but I really can't blame them if they don't. Why would you want to lose profits when your product is still selling so well, with little to no effort, and the big hitters haven't released yet? I was expecting MS to win with more than 200k units sold than ps4.

Maybe cboat was wrong, but I guess he wouldn't come out just to lie or troll us just like that.

They'll have to introduce some potentially revolutionary accessory, akin to Kinect for X360.

That's their only hope at this point.

In retrospect they're probably the best in the series in the past 5 years.

You think sales will increase by 250% even though Mario Kart and Smash are already out? 18 million is way too generous.

HOLY FUCK. Am I reading this right? AC:U at 9 during the holidays when NBA2k and Farcry 4 outsell it? Word of mouth must be spreading because most people including me thought the game would still do gangbusters even with the shit they pulled. Fuck, even a remaster beat it. Wake up Ubisoft.

Also Dragon Age 2 must have killed the series reputation, goddamn. I haven't started Inquisition yet (I own it, just haven't started yet), but most say it is an amazing improvement. Sad they weren't rewarded for it, seemingly

Way too high. It will struggle to reach 12-13 million. Next year the system will fall off massively worldwide with no big (Smash, MK level) releases left.

A Shining Example
MS gave it everything they had and didn't even make a dent in Sony's lead...meanwhile Sony didn't flinch on price and their holiday lineup is practically non-existent. Wow. it would seem like Sony has this generation on lockdown. 2015 should be a crazy good year for them too because this year they will actually have games.

Really impressed that GTA charted #2 even WITH the GTA PS4 bundle which wouldn't have counted towards their numbers. That game is a monster.

It's not so much spin as the recognition that when we're talking a million sales, 10k is a drop in the bucket. Reporting mistakes or even post-month returns could easily change the victor... it's essentially a 'tie', and if it were politics a recount would be likely if not certain. So sure, it's a victory, but given the sales and bundles and such, as others have noted, it's a Pyrrhic victory at best.
Nah, screw that.

I earned this victory. And I'm taking this win, however momentary it may be. I did this shit pretty much single-handedly, and I've been waiting months for this moment. Unless the difference was 500k, we'd end up with this line of conversation anyway. And I respect and understand everyone else's opinions. I really do. So it's not 500k. But that's okay for me. Xbox One did the impossible.

My efforts have been vindicated.

I'll hand the reigns to Phil and the boys for December, and if they fail to deliver like I have, I'll take over again starting January and inevitably build back up to my third victory (since Phil will probably take the division into the lair of Cthulhu within a few weeks of me being absent).

Also, I'd just like to point out that this means Xbox One has a chance. We just need to organise the strategy a little better, and add more of a long-term thought process behind the actions. There is no reason we can't build momentum and eventually get it to the point where these kind of victories are more consistent, and sustainable.

I do think there has to be careful consideration made to the type of slashing of their profit margin they required to even barely edge out PS4. Was the increase in unit sales for November NPD year-over-year sufficiently large enough to make the venture worth it relative to the diminished profit they made on the effort?

How much less would they have sold if they had only done similar bundles and pricing to PS4, though? There is value in selling lots of consoles, even if you're not out-selling everyone else. Growing the player base is important, and failing to generate any momentum could be more dangerous than making lower profits over a holiday season.

If the Microsoft PR used a combination of US and UK to claim a US NPD victory, that's crossing a line. (It's possible they were just highlighting a string of sales performance in both regions).

Still sketchy but its the latter - they're not combining.

I doubt Nintendo is that upset, as long as they're remaining profitable. I have a feeling they've already kicked the can on this generation, and are just making as much money as they can, much like Sony and the Vita (hence the lack of a doorbuster deal). Let's hope that fusion console comes out soon, although I dunno if Nintendo can make a profitable console that doesn't make the use of some cheap gimmick.

Yeah I said it

A lot less then 17 million and deservedly so. It's a mediocre system blessed with some fantastic 1st party devs desperately clinging onto increasingly irrelevant IPs.

Let me tell you this story.

Once upon a time, in another life where I wasn't the leader of Xbox, I was a high school gym teacher. And then there was this competition between my class and a class from another high school. I put forward my star student who was able to do the most amount of reps on a bench press. In the end, the opponent did 45 reps, before he exhausted himself. My student had only ever maxed out at 40 in the past.

But that day, I told little Jimmy that he's doing to do 46. Because 46 means he's going to win. And that's all that matters. Little Jimmy didn't have to 60 reps or 90 reps, he just had to do 46 reps.

And that's what he did. Little Jimmy went home with the gold that day.

Fact is, a win is a win. It may have taken everything, every ounce of energy, every drop of sweat, every drop of blood that the Xbox One has, but it did it. At least it wasn't like The Rock at Wrestlemania 17. He just gave up after 20 chair shots.

Wow, so its true... Halo, crazy price $329 + $50 + 2 games and only tiny difference?
Thirst is real.

Cant imagine whats gonna happen from now on.

Nice. Also factor in that MS said highest single month's sales and you can narrow it down a little more,I think.

Yes they did win but they're not in a much better position than they were before. Sony is likely to take December even if Microsoft continues its fire sales.
