Patrick Klepek gets called out on racism, sexism, rape jokes, child rape jokes, voyeurism and more

Also, this is a terrible thread. Just reposting Twitter screenshots and no personal thoughts or any context related to it.

Anyone who listened to him back in the 1up.com days isn't surprised by this. He made the same edgy jokes that everyone else did at the time. Does anyone remember that Luke Smith story about how he told Morgan Webb to "shut up while the men are talking?" It was about a Gears Of War preview event or something. The creep-shots, if they're his actual photography, are the only thing I would object to.

I'm not offended nor would I condemn him for his edgy jokes. It is funny seeing someone go from this to the type of person who has striken the word "insane" from his vocabulary because he considers it too offensive.

I don't know. People do change a lot. I'm not defending Klepek, but...

The shit I thought was funny at 20 is pretty cringeworthy from my current perspective.

Please don't insult other users by calling them a Miucin. You can be critical, just don't use insults of any type.
Dude, this is sooo lame, even YOU people should be ashamed to even make a thread about this. I mean, seriously, are you guys THIS desperate?

EDIT: Obviously you are.

“You people”? Please. This is a thread about a person who lords his ideologies and politicial opinions over others, attacking those who differ or disagree to the point of actively seeking to separate them from their places of employment.

When you actively and aggressively judge others and forget about the skeletons in your own closet, you run the risk of karma biting you squarely in the ass.

Oh my God, someone in the internet is being stupid and immoral and his name is Klepek!

Oh, hey, Mr. Miucin. Fancy seeing you here.

Absolutely, which is what makes the hypocritical crusade of him digging into old Tweets from his political opponents he has been targeting, even more hilarious.

I really hate this kind of weaponized social media dredging, no matter who the victim is.

Agreed. This is what spawned it though.

bitbydeath bitbydeath , you should probably add the tweet above to the OP with the context of what spawned people looking into him, since he was digging into old tweets from said person and contacting his employer.

This one is bonus for the thread.

If gaming press picks up on this story, I expect at least something similar to the reaction to the James Gunn firing.

— “He was young and foolish then”
— “People change as they get older”
— “He’s a great person who made some mistakes”
— “They were just jokes. He didn’t mean anything by them”

Sadly, the double-standard based on where one sits politically will continue to exist. Klepek has no problem working to get others from different ideologies or opinions fired, but when it’s him that fucks up and leaves the evidence behind? We’ll see what the outcome is— but the silence from his colleagues in the gaming press grows louder every minute.
This was my immediate reaction when I heard about this. Look for a Gunn-style circling of the wagons.

Sadly, once it started, there was no stopping it. It’s going to be a tit-for-tat war between the two political sides, each using social media at will as a weapon to harm who they perceive to be “the enemy”. Lots more people will lose jobs and face other hardships in the foreseeable future.

I am so glad there wasn't social media or cell phones when I was a teen. When did everyone decide to be retroactively outraged and decided loss of a career is an appropriate punishment for everything? I don't like this crap no matter which 'side' starts it.

I'm with you and the person you quoted. I am not a fan of these campaigns period. But if this guy is out there trying to get someone else fired, well, Karma's a bitch.

Cringeworthy, sure. Everyone's got different taste and that taste can mature with age. But Klepek's far left stance isn't that these jokes are merely cringeworthy. It's that they're normalizing sexism, racism, ableism, etc. Any flavor of bigotry you could care to name. And that because they normalize those attitudes, they indirectly contribute to discrimination, harassment or even rape. That's very different from saying that you personally don't find something funny.

That's why his approach to this isn't "live and let live" it's "this is harming society we must change it." That's why he can't allow himself to say the word "insane" anymore, or instinctively looks away at a sexualized depiction of a woman in gaming.

I don't think the Patrick Klepek of the past was contributing to a culture of bigotry. I think he was an awkward kid making some edgy jokes and there's nothing morally wrong with that. Aesthetically wrong, perhaps, but not morally.

It’s a social media problem. Social media makes it incredibly easy to gather a mob of like-minded people to execute vigilante-style “justice” against those who they feel “wronged” them in some way. Businesses began to fold under the pressure from these social media mobs, and a weapon was born.

It doesn’t matter who started it. Unfortunately, though, nobody will finish it anytime soon.

Even when the James Gunn controversy broke Klepek wasn't complaining about the disgusting and increasing trend of digging through social media /outrage mobs. He was complaining that it happened to someone he liked. That it was spear-headed by a political opponent. That the "left's morality was being weaponized against itself."

How about we all agree this is shit behavior regardless of who is doing it and what it's done for? It would be nice if we could also all stop pretending jokes are a serious reflection of someone's deeply held beliefs and that they're something to apologize for... But I won't hold my breath on that one.

This better not be digital blackface! Post your birth certificate immediately or action will be taken.

Skin is white as snow, but I grew up in Mississippi and spent my teenage years in Oakland, so I can confidently say I'm blacker than most BCT posters.

That was the general complaint about the Gunn situation. Many on the left side of the fence, who would have jumped at the chance to destroy Gunn if he wasn’t “one of them”, instead tried to explain the situation away, blaming something else or generating excuses.

The double standard is awful, and it’s sadly going to continue. It would be great if we reached a point where a truce could happen and weaponization would cease, but I doubt it.

I dunno.

I don't know who this guy is, I detest excessive PC culture and rampant SJWism and I find it kinda funny that the intolerance they created is biting them back... but it seems to me he was just joking around and being silly, maybe drunk... it's not a reflection of his real personality. We all did stupid things for fun in our college years (...and beyond). Do we all have to turn into robots?

Fair warning: please don't insult each other in this thread. There's lots of opportunity to do so but it's not advised if you want to have a discussion. Plus, it can land you a ban or warning depending on the severity.

Currently going through college in the age of social media. It really isn't hard to not be a dumbass. Apparently little ol' Klepek isn't that intelligent.

Having read quite a few of your posts, it's apparently harder than you think it is. :pie_grinning_smiling:

But on a serious note, it's definitely a lot harder. My parents used to give me the 5 miles in the snow to school speech. Never going to give that one to my kids.

I agree with this. Going through college recently or currently, you should have been made aware of the dangers of using social media irresponsibly. Hell, I wrote my ENG101 final paper on social media getting people fired, and that was 5 years ago!

Understanding that your internet history will forever follow you, and given that it can be weaponized against you at any time, you’ve got to understand what’s safe and what isn’t— even if you don’t like or agree with having to be so safe. It sucks, but (and I don’t like using this quote) “it is what it is.”

According to the wisdom of Klepffffek, if you joke about it, you are it. So he's a racist, sexist, rapist who likes children. I don't actually believe this because I'm a normal human being, but he does sell this kind of belief system so enjoy dying by your own rules, Pat.

Ditto, it's absolutely disgusting. I really wish society (obviously these culprits) would take a step back from all of this. For several years now I can't help but feel like this kind of nonsense is just making humanity take massive steps backward. :messenger_crying:

I don't think Patrick Klepek is a sincere SJW. Those jokes just reinforce this. He is a guy who makes the full SJW image to keep your job in the current media environment. And I have zero respect for people like him.

He definitely is one now. He joined the cult of being an SJW hanging around all of them. Even most of Giant Bomb turned into it except Dan from what I can tell. He just likes games.

I don't think most of these people are sincere. Were they truly offended by Colin Moriarty's joke Tweet? Were they truly offended about anything in FemFreq's YT videos? Were they truly offended that Far Cry 5 didn't go far enough in bashing Trump? No, they're all just spineless people who prefer to put on a facade their colleagues will agree with because it makes them feel virtuous and well-liked. They're dishonest and sycophantic. I mean jeez it's not like these people are some group of great political pundits or something. They're just sycophants.

Yeah but there's a bit of poetic justice when person who weaponised social media digging is being hit by his own creation.

I wouldn't call it Klepek's creation, but yeah, it's hard to feel bad for the guy when it doesn't seem like he would give you the same kindness.
