NPD Sales Results for April 2015 [Up1: Xbox One #1]

Nothing is solid, everything is permitted.

So basically NPD threads are this:

I did want to put up a picture of 'Arse Face' from the movie, but he might be NSFW :)

Um yes, I've seen it numerous times at Gamestop, Bestbuy, etc., as well as Xbox One. Amazon actually just held their own PS4 trade-in deal I believe last month or so.

The threads about trade-in consoles for PS4 were very rare. I think there was 3 or 4 threads only (last year).

Sony partnered with Amazon for a trade-in deal in the month of April.

http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=amb_lin..._t=101&pf_rd_p=2076523002&pf_rd_i=10825011011

Amazon console business is nowhere near Gamestop and Best Buy.

Just as common as Xbox One, so it did not win NPD because of it... I've seen the promo offered several times - the number irrelevant for the point.

There is no way you can say what did or didn't contribute to the extra sales for the month. Stop with that bullshit. Unless you somehow have access to in depth retailer level tracking and trends you have no way of knowing that.

XB1 had trade in discounts at two massive retailers (GameStop and BestBuy) along with additional games, controllers, gift cards, and live subscriptions bundled in with the ACU SKU at numerous retailers in order to clear stock over the course of April. Only an absolute fool would deny that these promotions had an impact in sales. Why else would they run them?

You're talking about this month? PS4 didn't have trade-in deals in Gamestop and best buy.

Wow the comments in this thread. Absolutely crazy stuff.

Congratulating Microsoft for selling 10k more than Sony. Sony should be ashamed?

Where are you getting this from? Amazon is one of the largest video game retailers period. Slickdeals is the number one deal website in the U.S. Its thread 97 pages long, very long for a trade-in deal compared to others.

Amazon covers only 5% of the NPD.

If we are talking about NPD. They are are about 6% compared to gamestop for example which is 35 iirc. On mobile can't be asked to find the chart Aqua posted before of the breakdown of market share for NPD tracking.

And with this post, I conclude that you don't use facts in your discussions. Amazon contributes only 5%-6%.

Ok I did not know. That was not the discussion though. The discussion is your claim MS won April NPD because of a trade-in promo at Gamestop. That is illogical because similar promos have been common over the last 12 months. This is not the first trade-in deal for Xbox One. Sony had one right before at Gamestop too, where you could have traded in your 360/PS3.

When the results are this close, these trade-in deals are the difference between winning and losing. PS4 was selling very well in February/March because of these deals.

Regardless, it makes no sense and its pretty foolish to say MS won because of a trade-in promo when both Sony and MS have done it numerous times over the last 12 months. This month is not any different.

What the hell does that have to do with the XB1 only promotions available during April? Why would the existence of similar deals prior to April make any difference to impact XB1 specific deals would have on sales in April? You are making zero sense. Please stop.

The same Xbox One and PS4 trade-in deal has happened numerous times in the last 12 months. Why does it all of a sudden make a difference this April? lol.

Furthermore, since this deal has happened times before, the number of 360/PS3 users who traded up to a PS4 is getting less and less every month, and by this April, that number is less with many people who have already upgraded to a PS4/XBO through promotions in the past.

Yet when Xbox One wins a NPD, it is because of trade-in deals.

Lmao.

This can be a dangerous year for the PS4. Sony's games lineup is atrocious this year while Xbox One has a lot more attractive titles.

Lol, Not atrocious at all.

E3 hasnt happened yet. Sony seem confident.

Third parties are a thing and will continue to be the best selling games this christmas.

Whoever is cheapest will win the holiday, not who has the longest list of exclusives.

Exclusives are baiscally there for the existing fans. they don't really entice new owners.
I know whats coming this Christmas and that i will want those xbox exclusives and still my xbox is on ebay. as its been sat there for the last 5 months hardly used and will still be sat there for another 5. May as well sell it now and rebuy this christmas prob for cheaper then what i sold it for and with more games.

Anyway that 10k advantage in the us isn't even a ripple in the water when add in the rest of the world.

Goodness, it's the morning after, and like a drunken tryst the XO's numbers don't look quite as hot in the cold light of day. And they typically look freakishly similar to the ex that is PS360 second year figures. Weird.

Well, that certainly puts a downer on the apparent success of the n3DS. Nintendo seriously needs new hardware and a new stratergy sooner rather than later. Hopefully NX delivers.

These deals make a difference every single time, they increase console sales.

Smh, there's still millions of people who didn't upgrade from PS360 and they're waiting for the right time to upgrade.

Yet it is laughable when Xbox One wins a NPD, it is because of trade-in deals.

Lmao.

Yes, these deals were one of the reasons why XB1 sold 187K this month. You seriously think XB1 number will be the same if it wasn't for these trade-in deals?

so read couple pages on this thread and looks like people are fixated on the theory of trade in deals.

i still dont think that really makes that much of a difference.

i thought of another possible reason call of duty dlc maybe i dunno.

DLC Map Pack #2 Release Date on Xbox One & 360: Tuesday, March 31st 2015.
DLC Map Pack #2 Release Date on PS4, PS3 & PC: Thursday, April 30th 2015.

this basically would give xbox the entirety of april for the exclusive content maybe people really want to play this. peer pressure could be pretty strong.

Nobody here is saying it's the only reason we are saying its a contributing factor along among others. Mainly the initial release of the MCC bundle. These are the only things that separate April from previous months where PS4 had a healthy lead. Looking at the spiked YoY demand increase it is perfectly logical to deduce that the price difference from last year
($499+game ----> $350 + 2 games) along with these two factors are the cause for the unexpected change in demand. Only a fool would argue that a $175 trade in discount would not inflate demand especially when their competitor had no such deal available during the same time frame.

I dont know if you are being purposely obtuse or what but you need to stop dismissing perfectly logical cases for what is basically sales anomaly in April NPD. Either propose and defend a hypothesis of your own or stop posting. You have no authority to tell everyone else what is or is not feasible in the absence of concrete evidence to the contrary.

Yes, I do not think they make much of an impact as you're making it seem - definitely not enough to win a NPD lmao. People buy the console they want, not because of a promotion deal. If a person wants a PS4, they are not going to trade in their PS3 for a Xbox One because of this deal. People could have all likelihood already used the trade-in deal on the console they want, or wait until the next one comes up for you guessed it, for the console they want.

There are other more plausible factors to why the Xbox One won this NPD, than I would say a common promotion.

We'll see next month and the next month when there is no trade-in deal on how it will do.

When the difference is 13K, then yes these deals makes you win or lose an NPD.

You're kidding yourself if you think all people buy the console they want no matter the price. Many people just want a next-gen console, these deals and promotions are the biggest reason why they choose one console over the other.

You know what's rude? Implying people proposing perfectly reasonable explanations for a puzzling sales result are being disingenuous fanboys. That's rude. Also I said

How did you miss the entire first half of that sentence? My point stands you're doing nothing but refuting other people's posts with absolute certainty despite having 0 supporting evidence to do so. You are not contributing theories of your own to explain the unexpected results you're just shitting on other people's. Either contribute a valid competing theory of your own to explain the results or quit posting. Either way you need to stop tearing down other people's hypothesis and painting them as being unreasonable without any supporting evidence to disprove them.

So over the last 6 months, PS4 and XB1 have been neck and neck in NPD rating terms.

Nov/Dec/Apr - XB1
Jan/Feb/March - PS4

No idea how this translates into units sold. It may even be that XB1 has done particularly well in that regard as Nov/Dec were both big months. Not sure.

If nothing else, it certainly shows that MS are now competitive, which can only be a good thing. Both consoles have been out for 18 months and they have been neck and neck in the US across the last 1/3rd of the time they have been in existence.

Obviously, worldwide is different, but progress is progress.

It wasn't intentional and doesn't matter. What authority is it that I need to propose a theory? What if I don't want to? That's not my goal. I've said is I'm sure the promotion has helped but I doubt it accounts for such a huge impact, especially enough to win entire NPD's. I've explained why.

It's an impact but not enough to win entire monthly NPD's. With Walmart, Bestbuy, Amazon, etc., I highly doubt not even a majority of purchasers (over 50%) used that promotion that was only by one retailer. Most people probably just picked up a MCC bundle at whatever store they happened to be at. In fact according to your chart, if you take the other retailers, there is plenty of more dealings other than Gamestop. Walmart is 25%, Target 15%, Bestbuy 12%, Amazon 6% - these retailers did not hold a trade-in Xbox One promotion and make substantial sales.

You know that the executives over at MS and Sony are laughing at you console warriors, right? Laughing all the way to the bank with their stock options and promotions. So, please, calm down. Nobody other than 15 year olds and a handful of obsessed fanboys care that much. Just enjoy the games and hope we have a great year of gaming.

Healthy competition going on in the NA, that´s good for the consumer. Low prices and good bundles all around. I just wish this "competition" would make its way overseas too Viking land

Why is everything doom and gloom in here?

Both consoles had great months compared to last year. The X1 won by a low margin, why is suddenly everything so sour?

We should be happy that these consoles keep on beating the records of their older predecessors. It shows a healthy market which will keep on being invested into to give us great games, great hardware and good advancements. Especially at a time when everyone was/is shouting, 'Consoles are dead!'.

Something like this cannot be so easily explained. The PS4 has also had trade-in deals pretty commonly over the last 12 months actually, and Xbox. This is not the first month of a Xbox One trade-in promotion..

So you don't want to post your own theory what happened this month as others suggested, but keep on shooting down possible theory of other gaffers but here you are so quick to suggest that it will be a terrible year for PS4 because of this months results? You're on a roll...

I did not say terrible. Can you quote me on that?

I'm sure the PS4 will do great but it can lose more NPD's this year - that is why I said dangerous. No, I am not going to explain my own theory on why one console outsold another as that is more or so impossible. There are MANY factors and I am not writing a research article.

The actual take away is that everyone this month did numbers that are really not good for anyone. These are not monthly numbers we want to see for a console in its second year.

Consoles are still on a decent trajectory overall, but it's months like these that make one wonder just how strong these numbers really are or if it's still a bit inflated from how long the past generation was and if we're still going to see major growth contraction even ignoring the Wii.

Actually 2 best buy/GameStop. How would u know that? I mean if we use welfare's averages XB1 won by 1-2 days worth of sales. That's means about 10% extra sales give XB1 the edge if my maths is right so a big majority wasn't really needed.

Mario Party 10 doing well in the second NPD was surprising.

Mortal Kombat X also doing over a million is too, especially since is currently on "current gen consoles"; when the 2011 game did a little less than that and was out to more people with 360s and PS3s.

Reading some reply I think sometime people need to read two times what they write.

Anyway, MKX is pretty amazing, I'm glad this game sold well.
Xbone #1 this month ? Good for them!
