PewDiePie Responds after using racial slur

Not open for further replies.
Let me say my personal experience with this type of person. Firstly, it's world wide. I played World of Warcraft vanilla on one of the most popular servers maybe 4-5 years ago, and also still experienced this up until I stopped playing like earlier this year. There was Russians, Americans, Germans, Balkans, Chinese, you name it. So whenever I was in battleground, or in a raid it wasn't uncommon for someone to say on vent or ts or discord, or type in raid chat "Nigger" after a moment they perceived as negative, such as a raid wipe, or some slight in bg. Now it wasn't every day, but it didn't need to be, ofc you tolerate it for the purpz, but I never said anything on voice chat, and very few people knew that I was black. NOW. What turned me away finally, was when I was personally attacked by some guy who whispered me and called me a nigger after I congratulated him on getting some loot lol. You know what was funny? Those same people who used "Nigger" out of perceived frustration, also came to my defense, and kicked this dude... which made me look inward on why I was still there, and also outward at these people and the way they think. It was surreal.

His apology is a non apology, because at the core, he just doesn't believe that he is racist (he is). He thinks that since he would never go up to a black person and call him that word, that it's ok to use it in a different context. Even around other black people. But the point is, the people who say that know exactly who they picture in their mind when they say it... And that's the crux of it all. He just won't admit why it's wrong, because he thinks then he will be considered a racist (he is), and nothing is worse than that.

Also, It's really hard to give him the benefit of the doubt, with that cringy shock comedy past of his. These boys watched Jackass and South Park, and Beavis and Butthead, but don't realize that took a lot of talent and wit. They just try to mimic the trollishness of it all.

It's pretty funny because the worst insult you could throw at him ain't something related to black people, it's actually the best describer we could have for him : racist.

At this point in time, we really need to hold YouTube responsible. While PDP is just a user of the site he is the face of YouTube. YouTube needs to hold PDP accountable, he is by far their biggest representation of that company. YouTube should not allow this dude's actions be sweeped under the floor again, YouTube has a problem with racists and their biggest Star is a massive racist.

The person didn't finish the whole sentence: "I'm terribly sorry that I'm losing advertisers but not for you."

No no, I mean, are there stories of advertisers pulling out? I know he lost some funding last time shit got stirred, but haven't heard about now.

Just out of curiosity: is he?

Disney dropped him when did the Nazi stunts and the whole Ad friendly gate was brought in because of him, so it would be very ironic if his videos somehow is "advertiser friendly".

But who knows if he's losing ad money or not, but I would hope that he is.

This is just stupid, you can't hold YouTube, as a company, responsible for what one user on their website said. If YouTube wants to, they have the right to dole out some form of punishment onto him, but they are not responsible for what someone said on their platform that has thousands of racist videos uploaded by people who are actually racist.

They did cancel a show he had, didn't they? They must think they have some responsibility in terms of how he represents the corporation.

As I said, they have a right to punish him if they want to. But they shouldn't be held responsible for one users actions. Do you understand what these words mean?

H3h3 are streaming their podcast right now on this issue and their response is pretty much how I thought it would look like:

"We're disappointed, but he's not racist. He hasn't beaten up a black person, so his actions are not really racist ... Is this an issue that mostly white people are raving about? ... Developers that are distancing themselves from PDP are evil and just seek revenge..."

You know who the real victim is here?
Mel Gibson.
The guy got blackballed for a decade because of something he did in private and he could have just have gotten away with it if he was just a plucky millionaire youtuber.

Gibson was undoubtedly an unhinged bigot with a substance abuse problem, but from what I've read he seems to have privately spent many years doing charitable work for a Holocaust survivors support org without ever trying to publicise it. I don't know what he is like as a person now, but I would be more inclined to see that as a sign of genuine contrition worthy of some kind of forgiveness than just sticking up a 2 minute apology on YouTube.

Everyone keeps assuming this. Is it because a few black people on YouTube are supporting him that they forget everyone else not posting videos on him?

These platforms ban ISIS sympathizers because it damages their platforms. If they don't want to have hate drive the content on their site by one of it's most prolific creators, they should ban him.

Damn dude, this is some real shit. But let's not forget that this is less trolling and more actual racism.

If YouTube wants to, they have the right to dole out some form of punishment onto him, but they are not responsible for what someone said on their platform that has thousands of racist videos uploaded by people who are actually racist.

They should impose a punishment, they PAY the man, after all. Advertisers will selectively boycott offensive media and corporations (which YouTube and Google are) will fine/suspend/fire/cease doing business with people who use their platform for hate, which he has on several occasions. Again, he gets paid by them. He is an entrepreneur but at the same time you can't consider him merely a "user" when he's banking.

Google has this funny double standard with what they will and won't take a stand for/against. Youtube isn't to blame for what the guy says, but they are to blame for forever turning a blind eye because of the views he brings.

"I'm an idiot, and that's no excuse, but I'll keep saying it just in case."
"I want to get better; yes, better, in a nebulous way that involves no specific changes or effort and doesn't require any defined goal or tangible result."

Who could have expected the classic "I apologize if I offended anyone."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-apology_apology#The_.22if_apology.22

Yep, I already knew an ifpology was the most we would get.

I guess at least this time he didn't literally give the middle finger to anyone, so... progress?

Given That they both provide his paycheck and make money off of him I don't see why they can't be held responsible. It's pretty clear he's broken the ToS several times and is only still there because YouTube is making bank off of him

So it's not a racial issue until someone gets physically assaulted for it???

The fuck outta here. H3H3 are garbage, but of course this was known.

A sincere apology would be him actually addressing the main issue. Not that he said the word, but rather why he did. He hasn't really done a proper introspection, because that would require him to admit to himself and to his audience that he might be harboring some racist/bigoted thoughts, and yet again ask why he spontaneously said it, rather than be sorry for getting caught saying it. It's simple, pursue the why, because that's when you are truly willing to change.

I think he's scared to admit it to himself though, it's hard to truly be honest with yourself. Most people simply don't want to view themselves as racist. Hopefully he'll come to this realisation.

Did you watch from the beginning, coz this is grossly misrepresenting what has gone down in this podcast. He said many times that he was extremely disappointed in Pewdiepie and that he refuses to defend him this time.

I too was very worried that Ethan would end up defending him given his history but was pleasantly surprised.

Yes, I did. And this is not misrepresenting at all - yes, they have said that what PDP did was undefensable, but they still said that he isn't racist or more importantly that his actions were not racist.

Knew iiiiitt.

Pewdiepie used the hard R. He felt that R so hard. He knew what he was saying and didn't have any issue saying it in his stream and brushed it off in his stream.

If H3h3 thinks that to be classified as a racist you need to beat up a person then he's sadly mistaken.

You can easily be a racist without ever laying a finger on the person and by letting his good buddy Felix off the hook he's pretty letting him get away with his action and will never understand how Felix's action has made it worse for other youtubers to make ad money when they got spooked with his Nazi "joke."

But nah it's easier to pin the blame onto Youtube and sweep the real problem under the rug and moan about how the professorial media doesn't take them seriously and how doesn't understand them.

This is a fair point. I just though the post I was quoting wasn't really giving an accurate description of the general tone that the podcast had taken over the issue. They were both incredibly critical of both Pewdiepie and those defending his use of the word.

I think ppl should watch it for themselves before jumping to conclusions.
