Eh, GAF's moderation suffers from laziness and inconsistency. The problem is that while getting more mods helps compensate for laziness, it worsens inconsistency. Things can be made more consistent and predictable, but it takes work.

I don't exclude myself from this assessment. Hell, even when I'm posting here I don't like putting forth much effort. That being said, every now and then at least one or two GAF mods get motivated and use the opportunity to improve things.

You should just make a permanent sticky for the evergrowing list of bannable offences. It's difficult for others to keep up.

For example, I didn't even know the 'legendary thread!' deal was banworthy until someone got cut down right in front of my eyes.

Think they'd agree to a Pokemon Diamond/Pearl wifi tournament when it comes out in April? :D

Seriously. I got banned for saying a picture "needed more spikes and swords". His comment for banning me was basically don't make fun of Japaneses games. Before that I was banned for quoting a picture and laughing and so was about 10 others in the thread. Seriously? Whats up with that?

Edit-
By the way this was on GAF.

I side with no one.

I can't believe that people have allegiances to forums in the first place. There are a select few here that I respect, since my respect is earned and not just given out willy nilly. I'm sure it would be the same for me over at TXB as well.

The problem is that while getting more mods helps compensate for laziness, it worsens inconsistency.

Worsens inconsistency? Not really sure what that means.

I've been banned over at TeamXbox ever since the Xbox launch where I had the audacity to point out that my local Target (or Wal-Mart or something) had a kiosk with a dead Xbox in it. Oh, the horror - who's got the mod nazis, now?

Mods here operate on a mostly individual basis. There's no actual consensus where everyone goes 'Yep, tha guy over there, should we ban him? Lessee... 4 in favour, 2 against. Guess he's gone.'

Due to individual tolerances, it's only natural there's going to be inconsistency. Dragona is notorious for clamping down on thread shitstorms, while Amir0x is often found contributing to said shitstorms. :/

I agree.

I dumped that site a LONG time ago.

I really didn't like the way the people ran the site.

Don't give them any more hits please.

Poor baby, does talking about the price of your little Sony God Box make you unhappy? Not everyone has a currency calculator tabbed in their browser.

Do you even understand what I mean?

We could sit here all day and say "how much is that in dollars?" for tvs, cars, clothes, mcdonalds happy meals and we'd get a "WOW" from them all for the price difference.

Converting the price into dollars does not do anything, it has no significance for anything, all it shows is that at the moment I can (nearly) get 2 dollars for every £1, the only viable reason for people saying it is to be like "Wooo, look at the big number." in real World terms it means nothing, no American needs to know this.

The PS3 is 33% higher launch price then PS2 in Britain was, I think it's less for some European countries. That's relevant, the American version is an 100% increase over PS2, make that comparison.

Nooo... see, Hitokage is stating that there already isn't consistency. It's inconsistent. The adding of more mods would only serve to worsen the already-existing inconsistency.

While that's true, there is scope for discussion on bans, and it's not exactly infrequent that a ban will be extended/reduced/removed as a result of discussion arising from the ban records.

The inconsistency comes more from what individual mods will ban for in the first place - some are more lenient than others in general, and some have their own personal issues that they take more seriously than others (feel free to mock professional wrestling when I'm around, but if bish sees you... flee).

Oh, well, that sounds a lot more (what's the right word?)... fair, I guess.

I just try not to step on anyones' toes unless there's an actual full-on debate ongoing.

I'd say the main problem is you have too many "dirty" mods in your ranks that like to jump into "average citizen mode" way too often which in turn makes you all look like hypocrites. I mean, you cant be a cop and slang on the block and then turn around and arrest other hustlers on the block without some repercussions.

These mods seem to ban people just because they didnt like a particular post by a particular poster on a particular day. Having the threshold for what's a bannable offense seemingly vary depending on the mod certainly doesnt help anything either. What you all need is a mod for the mods....

I think that's what most people have a problem with. Mocking professional wrestling should either be ban worthy or not ban worthy, regardless of a mod's personal opinion on the sport.

And I agree with some of TXB's points. The fact that we have banned/censored sites here is ridiculous. We're a videogame forum, yet we're not allowed to link to other videogame sites because of... what? Someone here doesn't like folder or whoever the hell runs k0taku?

The whole forum has turned into a giant circle jerk of "Look how l33t we are. We have industry insiders post here."

And don't even get my started on the NPD thing. It's just embarassing now. GAF is one of the more prominent video game discussion sites, and for hours we were pretty much the only site that couldn't post the NPD numbers BECAUSE of our special relationship with them. Everyone was terrified that they would get banned if they talked about them even though the numbers were available in tons of other places. Square2005 gets banned for posting software numbers that EvilLore posted later on. Is anybody going to unban him now?

Who gives a shit. What, they get a week vacation from typing LOL 14 times a day? It's not that big of a deal. These boards become a problem when BS runs rampant and if I had any complaint, it would be to see more bans. Let a few people unplug from gaf and settle down. The natural evolution is the mods help push a few turds out and we all feel lighter. Perma bans end up from douches that push the limit. This board isn't a right. Everybody knows when they get banned that they see it coming.

BTW, the default view for TXB is 15 posts per page. WTF is that shit? Gaf +1.

I've been around here for over 6 years and I gotta say that the moderation is worse than it's ever been. I don't know what the hell constitues bans anymore. Some people will say some insignifigant statement or quip and they'll get banned while others seem to have free reign and throw out garbage to their hearts content. Not everyone is spending their life on the irc so we're not privy to all of GAF's hidden rules . A little consistancy would be nice along with a list of crap detailing what the hell we can't say this week.

I'm not happy with that arrangement either. Unfortunately, we've been put under the spotlight, and Legal CYA is priority one.

That being said, I personally think that we should just clamp down on any original leaks. Once information is out, it's out, but again, that's just me.

like anything else it requires experience.

New members should mind their P's and Q's until they get accustomed to the way of things at NeoGAF. Even though I've been hit with the ban stick over minor comments a couple times myself I'd rather the mods be heavy handed rather than let the trolls have free reign over this place.

Be heavy handed if you must, but at least spell out (and ensure it's easily accessible) what is and is not allowed.

If you want to make it a law that dissing wrestling is not allowed, do so. Just make sure that GAFfers know about it so we don't get bansticked. Like that horrible screwup of a thread that announced VF5 going to X360. People who didn't know any better went in, made jokes about the PS3 losing more exclusives, and fell by the dozens.

I dont think TBX forums are so bad. I mean it is a XBOX centric site so just like the playstation.com forums and the nintendo.com forums its really only good if you want to deal with posts specifically about those systems.

The big probem is when 'multiplatform' forums have a small core group running the show that are all friends, have a collective video game bias, and dont have any management experience therefore end up managing the forums with no inconsistancy or sense of professionalism.

The community of such forums wnds up shrinking to a core group of 200 or so total users as anyone with a differing opiion of the core group has been banned till the end of time.

Then the small closed community sits around and wonders why they only have 10 logged in users at any given time, and sometimes only one or two posts a day.

I have to hand it to GAF - as a multiplatform site/forum, it has managed to stay strong thruout the years - and really when the internet is full of a drove of biased teenbrats, its quite a task to keep the peace on a multiconsole forum and still grow a community and GAF has managed to do all of that...

Its not a feat the TXB forums have managed to pull off - they got it so much easier.

Back when the Dreamcast came out there was a pretty good small community called CloudChaser - I actually found it when searching for DC information and instantly became a member. The forum stayed strong - then the DC fell off the NA radar the site broke into two major contengencies - Nintendo fans who hated SONY for stunting the growth of the N64, and Microsoft/nintendo fans who both hated sony for killing the Dreamcast. It became a multiconsole forum that was VERY anti-sony. Being a Nintendo/SONY supporter it became annoying to get any pro sony thread trolled to death and then locked - posters there would outright indicate that PSO SONY threads/info were SPAM, and the poster should be banned....as this happened more and more often, more SONY supporters got banned untill the MSFT/Nintendo fans on the site dominated 50:1.....

To make matters worse for poor cloudchaser, as the years went on it was orphaned and readopted by many other sites that would rise/fail....now it goes under the name "Modojo" and is attached to a decent site about handheld/portable gaming.

While the new site is good it hardly sees any traffic - in fact most of the sites forum users will openly post that Modojo is a weak site and the forums are the only good part about it - somehow the site admins let this kind of stuff go on.

Now they have banned or lost thru annoyance most of the SONY supporters, and have reached the state I mentioned above - a small group of core users who mostly all share the same bias (or just dont post LOL) and usually no more than 15-20 users logged in at any time....every few months someone will post about "Why dont we have any users/new users?"

Ummm duh!

Oh also 80% of their threads there are re-posts from GAF so like every news message will be followed by "stolen from GAF" - some of the mods there trying to save face, will see a post on GAF, and go look at the source of the GAF thread. Then they will try to post at Modojo with the source information presented in a different way pretending they ddidnt steal it from GAF - LOL its so pathetic.

Someone just needs to shut her down.

Too an extent I agree, but wouldn't it be easier for all parties involved to have a set of written rules? By doing that, you put the responsibility in the users hands by providing them with guidelines to abide by.

nintendo.com forums has a pretty good system for this - new users cant post for like 3 days AND untill they have viewed 300 or so posts....

It forces the user to spend time reading and figuring out WTF is going on before they can just jump in and start posting.

I think that it'd be hard for GAF to have written rules because some of the mods may feel like they lose a bit of power.

Can making wrestling jokes really be a bannable offense? What about if we get a mod who is a true hockey fan down the line? If jokes about homosexuals aren't allowed, what makes jokes about Christianity or any other religion fair game?

The rules change as the mods change and like a poster said above, the only way to be able to conduct yourself within GAF is to be here for a long time.

I think that these inconsistencies(sp) is what will make it hard to have written rules here.

Wow, I've been mentioned in a forum thread. =D

Obviously I havent been here for that long but I will say it does well to support multi format games. Topics are covered for any system of any age of any game of any genre with very few topics being de-railed.

I posted a topic on what life was like being in the industry and found it very informative. I may not be considered much of a regular, but its one of the few (Read, two) forums I actively post in these days.

This quote from TeamXbox annoys the hell out of me though (Even though I only read the first page)

it sounds like its not set on rules but more like personal opinion

So...what I pick up from that is...forming an opinion about something is a bannin'? If I mention that I dislike the Xbox 360 its going to spell DOOM for me?

The only two places (gaming forums) I am signed up are the ps3 forums, and here.
And I prefer TXB over all.

Wow Better than all other ONE sites you signed up for? TeamXBox members really have taste.

P.S. TeamXBoxmembers reading this; I pluralized site on purpose.

No. Didn't you know? We're all Microsoft-hating Sony fanboys, so it's fine to form a negative opinion about the 360. Mention that you dislike the PS3 and you're gone, though.

Teamxbox is one of the worst forums i've ever had the displeasure of visiting. It doesn't matter how many times you post the facts of something and back them up with links, they just live in their own little fanboy dream world and flame away. They don't have a clue about console sales, they dont have a clue how the industry works and constantly bash any ps3 game screen shots that get posted. Now the wii is doing well and is a 'threat' to the 360 they feel the need to bash that as well. Without doubt the single worst poster on that forum is THE GIANT CRAB who is even worse than an ex teamxbox poster called SUPERDUD. The giant crab comes into every sales thread and drops a massive FUD bomb on the data and despite being proven wrong time and time again, continues to post and spin all the way home. I can count the amount of decent posters on teamxbox on one hand, speevy being one of them.

GAf is pretty stupid. 10 page threads about one games anti-aliasing vs anothers anisotopic filtering, idolizing and projecting heroic traits onto their religio... coughcough console's respective PR rep (peter moore, kutaragi, etc), hyping games for years and then playing them for 10 minutes only to discuss them in a thread for another decade, duke nukem in devlopment forever lolol, 360 is better than ps3 (it really is though), 360 is a brick lol ps3 has no good games, metal gear solid is the best game ever and should be takin seriously, derrr the game uses ogg instead of mp3, help i cant afford a system because im too lazy to get a job but my mom will buy me god of war 2 cuz i got a good progess report, hey guys check out this game thats coming out in 2 years peter moore said itll be amazing so it must be true, such a shitter
